Introductory session to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners

During the summer of 2020 we give you the opportunity to start an inward journey instead of travelling abroad. On three occasions this summer we’ll have introduction classes to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners (15/6, 13/7 and 17/8)

The class gives you an introduction to the basics of Ashtanga yoga and is suitable for those who have never tried yoga before, but also to those who have already practiced other types of yoga and who want to learn the special method of Ashtanga. The focus of the class is on becoming acquainted with one’s own breathing, learning to synchronize breath and movement (so-called vinyasa krama) as well as the practice of Sun Salutation A + B and some closing postures from the Ashtanga Yoga sequence. You will also get a brief insight into the background and philosophy of yoga, its health benefits for both body and mind as well as practical advice on how to get started with a regular practice.

All participants are offered to take part in two weeks of Mysore classes immediately after the introduction – WITHOUT EXTRA COST. Mysore class is the way Ashtanga yoga traditionally is practiced. Read more about the Mysore classes under class descriptions

The teacher is Isabella Nitschke, Authorized Level II by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India

The class is given in partnership with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration is required and done through Medborgarskolans website (click the link). We have an age limit of 16 years and participants under 18 need the approval of their guardian.

POSTPONED until 2021 – ASHTANGA YOGA SUMMER RETREAT at KADERMO CONSCIOUS LIVING

We are very sad to inform you that because of travel restrictions and safety precautions put in place due to Covid19, Isabella will not be able to travel to teach at Kadermo in 2020.  Her week-long retreat is therefore postponed until July 2021. Please note that Kadermo Conscious Living will be open for summer visitors who are able to travel and founder and owner Stefan Engström will teach throughout the summer.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

Kadermo Island is situated a couple of hours from Helsinki and is easy to get to by train directly from the airport. The retreat centre offers a unique opportunity to experience yoga in a peaceful, untouched and idyllic setting. There are no shops or cars and hardly any people on the island. The retreat is set in a protected oak forest area where some of the trees are 500 years old.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga retreat is the home of senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Stefan Engström. He was born on the island and founded the retreat centre in 1994. Since then people from all over the world have been coming together to practice yoga and conscious self-development with Stefan and guest teachers.

Weekly programme
The week includes two daily yoga classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All yoga classes during the week are taught by Isabella Nitschke,  authorised (level2) ashtanga yoga teacher. There are two yoga halls available with plenty of room for both asana and quiet practices.

Upon arrival on the Sunday evening we’ll gather for a welcome and introduction session followed by dinner.

In the mornings there will be Mysore style class for more the more seasoned practitioners and depending on the level of participants there may be the opportunity for more guided teaching. Before morning asana class we practice silence and students may may do their own meditation and breathing practices in the meditation hall.

Afternoon class are held16.00-18.30. This class gives an opportunity for Isabella to help you deepen your understanding of the practice by looking at asana technique, yoga philosophy and chanting. Each class will have a different theme depending on the participants’ needs but will also include some easy pranayama and relaxation techniques. A light dinner is served at 19.00.

The Facilities

Students are accommodated in various places on the island, there is a two-storey summer house on a stunning rocky area overlooking the sea which is 10 mins walk from the yoga shala, there are also rooms the winter house which is closer to the yoga shala. These are built in an old fashioned traditional villa style that was common in the twenties.  All toilets are composting and showers are eco-friendly.

We enjoy vegetarian lunch and dinner cooked by the globally adored resident chef Anu from Anu’s Cafe in Mysore. Herbal teas are available all day. The café is also open straight after morning practice for coffee and smoothies (not included in the price). After lunch you have free time to explore the surroundings, walk, swim, go canoeing, read a great variety of yoga books from the library or enjoy the Finnish sauna.

Booking

All reservations and payments are done through Stefan at Kadermo Conscious Living by email Stefan@Kadermo.fi . The number of participants is limited in order to give everyone a personal and special experience of their time on the island. The retreat centre retreats all summer long and there are discount options for those wanting to stay more than one week. For more information and details about the summer programme please visit the Kadermo Conscious Living website. For questions about the yoga classes or your practice please email Isabella.

YINYOGA & MEDITATION with Miho, 3 summer classes

During the summer of 2020, Miho teaches three special classes of Yinyoga and meditation. The classes take place on a monthly basis (24/6, 22/7 and 26/8) on site at the shala and online through the virtual meeting tool Zoom. You may attend all or individual sessions. The teacher, Miho Hellén-Halme, is a qualified Yinyoga teacher and a regular practitioner of Ashtanga yoga.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you take time to explore the sensations in your body. You stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with), turn your attention inward and scan your body to see if there is any tension, while trying to relax using your breath. In this way you stimulate and stretch the connective tissues that keep all the muscles and organs together while at the same time you cultivate tranquillity and awareness.  The visual shape of the posture becomes secondary to how you surrender and focus on inner sensations. This is a perfect complement, both physically and mentally, to more dynamic forms of training such as Ashtanga yoga.

At the end of the class, we will do a semi-guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes. All levels of practitioners are welcome regardless of previous yoga experience!

Please remember to:

– bring a cushion or a blanket (which you can fold and use as a cushion) to sit on during the meditation session. Yoga blocks and smaller blankets/towels can also be good to have.

– as we will mostly sit or lie down, bring a long-sleeved clothes if it is a chilly day.

All classes are held in collaboration with our partner Medborgarskolan. Sign up and pay through their website

UPDATE: COVID-19 GUIDELINES at the SHALA

Dear practitioners,

Your health and safety is of utmost importance yo us. In order to stop/limit the spread of Covid-19 and other seasonal flu we follow guidelines issued by Folkhälsomyndigheten. Our shala remains open for practice until further notice but we kindly ask you to be extra careful and practice saucha/cleanliness (and common sense) when you come to class! We on our side make sure the premises are being cleaned more often and that surfaces that are being touched by many, such as door handles, are sanitized regularly.

We kindly ask you not to come to the shala if you’re sick or even if you have any mild symptoms of flu. We also ask people belonging to risk groups to stay at home for the time being. We will broadcast a few of our classes online for those of you practicing at home and will keep everyone up to date of any changes of our schedule/opening hours.

Please respect follow the following guidelines when you come to the shala:

– Shower before you come to practice

– Wash your hands frequently. Use hand sanitizer (available at the shala)

– Avoid touching your face, nose, eyes

– Bring YOUR OWN yoga mat, avoid using the “rental” mats

– Bring a sweat towel

– Take your mat home and clean it after every practice

– Wash your practice clothes and mat towel after each practice

– Don’t leave rugs or mat towels at the shala. Take home and wash!

– Avoid using props or blankets at the shala (we will clean them)

– Keep extra space between the mats – at least 1 meter

– Be ok with not receiving any physical adjustments

– Stay at home if you’re feeling sick (you should never practice with fever or sore throat anyway)

We ask you all to kindly cooperate so that we don’t have to close or risk spreading any virus. Please remember that in times of insecurity and stress it is of vital importance to keep up good health routines to keep our immune system strong. We encourage all of you to keep up your regular practice, whether in the shala or at home despite the difficult situation. We are here for you and if you need support or have questions about your practice please don’t hesitate to send us a message. Keeping in touch with a community is important in times where we are more and more isolated from each other.

Stay safe and healthy!

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2020

Summer is finally here with the holidays just around the corner. However, this summer will most likely be different from previous years since we are not able to travel as freely as we are used to. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö follows the guidelines of the Public Health Authority and the Government, and has therefore chosen to modify our travel plans with alternative solutions for the summer. Our annual retreat at Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland is postponed until the summer of 2021. Instead, we take vacation close to home with some yoga weekends in Mölle. The shala doors in Malmö are open all summer and we have special offers for both new and old students. Continue reading below for detailed info on all offers and events this summer:

On two occasions this summer we have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Yoga by the Sea – Studio Mölle. Isabella leads two weekend workshops with Morning Mysore and afternoon class. You can attend one or both weekends. Read more about both weekends on our events page

HEALTH & SAFETY – As long as the Public Health Authority special recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures in place at the shala. As some restrictions are eased across Europe and at home, we will slowly reintroduce SOME physical adjustments in class. With this, we also take the opportunity to introduce so-called consent cards. We are aware that direct touch can be sensitive for reasons other than just covid19, and we hope that these cards will help preserve the safe space we strive to create in our shala. When you see the cards in the shala, please choose one and place it next to your mat so that it is visible to the teacher (Green: yes please help me; Orange: only vocal adjustments please; Red: neither vocal nor physical adjustments today please).

We also ask everyone who comes to class to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) that we have set up for all who enter the shala. If you are unwell or feel the slightest symptoms, please stay at home and recover. Please don’t hesitate to message us if you have any questions or need support in your yoga practice from home.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned in between newsletters by following our pages on social media. If you are not a member of our closed Facebook group for shala practitioners, we recommend that you apply to gain access to daily messages and updates.

Have a lovely summer – but remember to keep  washing your hands!

Isabella & crew
