NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2018

Believe it or not, we’re already half way through the autumn semester. The first round of beginners’ courses is about to “graduate” and two groups of new ashtangis are ready to fly. We’d like to welcome all the new students to our Mysore classes and flag our “Ashtanga Yoga Malmö/Lund Practitioner’s group” on FB. There you can ask questions, share experiences, give advice and get internal shala news (click the link above to join). This newsletter contains important info for October+November such as temporary schedule changes, new courses and events as well as some practical things in the shala.

NEW ENTRANCE IN MALMÖ – please note that the shala in Malmö hereafter is accessed via the door at Grangatan 2 (around the corner). The old door code is still valid but needs to be entered twice; first at the main entrance and then at the glass door inside the hallway. You find the [small] keypad on the wall just next to the door.

TEMPORARY SCHEDULE CHANGES – our regular schedule continues until 21/12, after which we’ll have a special Christmas&New Year schedule for a few weeks. Please note that between 11-31 October, Isabella is in India to participate at a Yatra in the Himalayas with R. Sharath Jois and Eddie Stern. In her absence cover teachers will keep the schedule running. A detailed schedule for the period can be found here

GUIDED PRIMARY SERIES – takes place on the first Sunday each month (the Mysore class is cancelled those days). Upcoming dates are 7/10 and 4/11 at 9:00 in Malmö. The class is open to all, but it’s not suitable for beginners. After class, we meet for tea & talk where we discuss a yoga-related theme. On 7/10 we talk about “A Sustainable Yoga Practice” and on 4/11, Isabella shares stories from her trip to the Himalayas.
Those who do not feel ready for full guided primary series are welcome to the Beginner’s level 2 class (guided up to half primary series) that takes place every Sunday at 11:30 in Malmö.

NEW BEGINNERS COURSES – start in Malmö in November shortly after the autumn holidays. Isabella teaches the course on Monday evenings starting 5/11 and Sara teaches the Saturday morning course starting 10/11. All upcoming courses are available here

FRIDAY-FUN – our alternative after-work class returns on 9/11 at 17:00 in Malmö with the theme “Back to Basics: Jump back, jump through”. It will be a challenging class but as always we’ll have great fun! Sign up now to secure your spot!

WORKSHOPS in other cities – in November, Isabella is invited to teach special weekend workshops at USYoga in Borås and Mpiyo in Helsingborg. Why not join or share with friends in the area who might be interested?

SAVE THE DATE – for our annual vegan potluck brunch on Sunday 2nd December. This is one of our favourite events of the year and not to miss! Read more on the events page and mark your calendars!

Our next newsletter will be published at the end of November. It’ll contain more info about social events at the shala in December/January as well as the schedule for Christmas and New Year. NEWSLETTER Christmas&NewYear 2017

Greetings from Mysore, India, where I (Isabella) spend December and January studying with my teacher R. Sharath Jois at the KPJAYI. In this newsletter you’ll find information about our winter schedule in January, our relocation in Lund and Malmö and a sneak peek at the spring schedule that starts in February. But, first a brief report on life in Mysore.

Every day, six days a week, I wake up at 2am to prepare for Mysore class at 4am. Practice lasts about two hours, then I go home (before sunrise) to do pranayama, sleep a little, have breakfast and then head off for chanting at the shala or at semi-private classes that I take. Every afternoon I participate in a course on the Bhagavad Gita; its message and philosophy. My schedule is thus rather full. In January, I have been asked to assist Sharath during the second morning shift which starts at 6.30am. Sharath teaches every day from 4-11.30am except on Saturdays when it’s led primary series and Mondays where we have led primary and intermediate class. On Sundays and moon-days we rest – which is really needed. Practice is intense, hot and it’s full on focus in the shala . After practice one is completely shattered but luckily there’s a guy selling fresh coconuts outside the shala.

Mysore is a culturally and historically important city in southern India and here is much to do and see besides yoga. It’s noisy, messy, dusty and charming – as only India is. Everyone is friendly and after all my trips here it feels almost like home. The few hours we have outside of practice we are for coffee with friends, to enjoy the sun on a roof top or to visit colourful markets in town. During my stay, I will also visit the charity V-Care for whom we arranged a fund raising in 2017. I will personally hand over the money you donated and report back from the meeting. If you’d like to know more about V-Care you can continue reading here . And should you have any spare coins left from your Christmas shopping we’d appreciate if you’d consider donating them to V-Care in support of education of casteless children in Mysore. You may swish your donation to this number 123 576 46 91.

I hope you continue your yoga practice in my absence because I have a lot to share with you upon my return in February. Please remember that the autumn schedule ends on 22/12 after which we close for two weeks over Christmas and New Year. Classes resume on 8/1-2018 with a special WINTERSCHEDULE for January (click on the link to download or see below).

Some classes are only self-practice in January and the Mysore class on Wednesday evenings in Lund will be discontinued. Instead, we launch a Beginners’ level II course (guided half primary series) on Wednesday evenings in February. You can read more about this below. On 2 February the spring schedule starts and I’m back from India. In January there are three “moon days” when we don’t teach. All dates for January and onwards are found here

RELOCATION – as from January our new location in Lund will be at Fabriksgatan 2, 4th floor. All morning Mysore classes in Lund will be held there. The beginner’s courses will take place at Folkets Hus in Lund. In Malmö we move at the end of January. We relocate to Föreningsgatan 72 at Värnhemstorget, just next to Coop. The maps on our website will be updated shortly. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the relocation may cause, but ask for some patience and understanding that not all may be perfect during the first few weeks. We ask those of you who store yoga mats at the shala in Malmö to take them home in due time before the move.

NEW BEGINNER’S COURSES – start in Malmö and Lund in February. You find all the info and registration here. New this spring is a Beginners’ level 2 course on Wednesday evenings in Lund. The course aims to guide participants through the first half of the Primary series. You can take the whole course or register with your monthly/”klippkort”. Please read more here

WORKSHOPS – the Friday-fun sessions continue in Malmö once a month and Isabella will also teach similar workshops in Copenhagen throughout the spring. All events are available and ready to sign up for on our eventspage

COTTON MATS from Mysore, yoga mat bags and Sharath’s book Astanga Yoga Anusthana can be ordered straight from me. As every year I will ship some goods from Mysore to Sweden, but since space is limited, you need to put in your order by email to me at the latest on 8 January.

That’s all for now; in mid-January you’ll receive the next newsletter containing the spring schedule, the latest news about our relocation in Malmö etc. Until then, stay up to date by consulting this news page and/or by following us on social media, Facebook and Instagram  for pictures from Mysore and other stuff.

I wish you a happy holiday season and all the best for the New Year.
Isabella

NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2017

Autumn is coming to an end and we are rapidly approaching December and the festive season. The current schedule runs until 22/12 after which we pause for two weeks over Christmas & New Year. Classes resume on 8/1-2018. The New Year brings a lot of change for us with relocation to new studios in both Malmö and Lund. Read more about this and all the fun that happens before the end of the year in this newsletter.

SCHEDULE CHANGES; in December and January, Miho, Anna, Sara and Sofia cover classes while Isabella is in Mysore, India, studying at the KPJAYI. Exactly who teaches when, as well as other temporary schedule changes, is available here on our news page. Note that there is no chanting on Sundays in Isabella’s absence. Instead the Mysore class starts at 9.00am. A detailed winter schedule for January will be posted on the website before the holiday break. The spring schedule starts when Isabella returns in February.

PRACTICE CARDS; If you already have or buy a practice card (only periodic cards) that runs over the Christmas/New Year’ break, we’ll automatically extend the card by 2 weeks.

MOON-DAYS; please remember that we don’t teach at full/new moon. In November, all “moon-days” fall on Saturdays and do not affect the teaching, but please keep up to date by noting upcoming dates in your calendar. Future dates are available here

GUIDED CLASS of HALF primary series (until Navasana) is taught on Thursday, 16/11 at 17:00 in Malmö. The Mysore class is cancelled then. Participants of the current beginner’s courses who would like to practice that day may do so at 16.15-17.00.

GUIDED CLASS FULL primary and POT LUCK/PARTY takes place on Sunday, 26/11 in Malmö! Isabella teaches the last guided class of the year which starts at 09.30am (no Mysore class that day). The class is suitable to all levels (except beginners), regardless of whether you’ve completed the series or not. Please be on time though – no entry once the class has started! After class, everyone is invited to our annual vegan pot luck brunch. You may attend only the brunch should you not make it to class. Please bring a vegan contribution to the buffet (we follow the yogic principle ahimsa/non-violence). Family/friends are also very welcome but everyone is asked to sign up in advance. Let us know whether you’ll attend the guided class and/or brunch. More info about the event can be found here

WORKSHOPS; this year’s last “Friday fun” will be held in Malmö on 17/11 at 17-19 with theme back bending. We’ll explore different techniques on how to approach everything from basic to more advanced back bends. The workshop is open to all but requires some previous yoga experience. More info and how to sign up is to be found here.

RELOCATION/CHANGE of VENUE; at the end of the year and during the month of January we are relocating studios in both Malmö and Lund. In Lund, we move to Fabriksgatan just behind the Central Station. In Malmö we move to Medborgarskolan’s studio at Värnhemstorget. Both venues have better shower and changing facilities than we have today and allow for easier transfer for those who commute. We’re hoping for a smooth relocation process that won’t affect our schedule too much. The new addresses, maps, etc. will be posted on the website in good time before the move and you’ll receive further information including the January schedule in the next newsletter which will be sent to you before the Christmas break. Please also visit our news page and check the schedule page which are updated regularly.

That’s all for now. Remember to follow us on social media such as Facebook and Instagram for the latest news and other interesting stuff.

See you on the yoga mat

Sharath Jois’ workshops in Copenhagen and Stockholm where we experienced a little Mysore-feeling on home ground. Isabella also took a trip to Berlin to refresh some of her anatomy knowledge at a workshop with Stu Girling. She also got some fresh teaching inspiration when meeting colleagues at a few yoga schools there. We are thus ready to start the autumn with a lot of fresh enthusiasm.
