Yoga workshop with guest teacher Matt Ryan 27-30 Dec 2021(tentative dates )

Twice in the past year we’ve (sadly) had to postpone  Matt’s visit to Malmö due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have now agreed on the new (tentative) dates of 27-30th December for his workshop here. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö is very honoured and happy to welcome Matt Ryan to our shala and we look forward to him sharing his long term experience of Ashtanga yoga and Zen Buddhism with us.  Matt will teach Mysore style classes in the mornings followed by afternoon workshops with including both Zen meditation and asana practice. The full programme with exact dates and timings will be announced below soon.

About Matt

Matt Ryan, originally from Manchester, has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over 20 years. In addition to having his own shala in Manchester for many years he has taught yoga around the world, most lately in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, California. In 2020 he returned to the UK where he is now settling in Margate. Matt is married to Lina from Lund, and thus has links to Sweden which he frequently visits to see family and friends.

10 years ago Matt started studying Zen Buddhism which foundations lie in the daily sitting practice of Zazen. When he added Zazen to his Ashtanga practice he noticed an immediate effect resulting in a steadier more focused mind whilst moving through the asana sequences – the end result being a sense of in the moment presence coupled with a strong flexible mind & body. In addition to his experiences from the Ashtanga Yoga practice he will give an introduction to Zazen during his workshop in Malmö.

ASHTANGA YOGA WEEKEND with TIM FELDMANN (open for bookings)

We are happy and honoured to welcome experienced Ashtanga Yoga teacher and practitioner Tim Feldmann to our shala in Malmö. Due to the Covid19 pandemic and other unforeseen events we had to postpone his 2020 visit. But we are now delighted to be organising the workshop in August 2021on the weekend of 20th-22nd instead .

Tim will share with us not only his great energy and humour, but also his long time experience of the Ashtanga yoga method and deep knowledge in anatomy and mechanics of movement. Join us for this inspiring weekend workshop – you find the detailed program and more info about Tim below. The workshop will be held in English and we will limit the number of participants according to the Public Health Authority restrictions and Covid-19 safety measures will be in place. Timings for morning Mysore class may therefore have to be altered to accommodate the rules.

ABOUT TIM

Tim is the co-founder and captain of the world-wide recognized Miami Life Center which he runs with his wife Kino MacGregor. He has practiced yoga since 1994 and Ashtanga Since 1999. Authorized to teach directly by Pattabhi and Sharath Jois, he explores core concepts and modern boundaries of Patanjali’s yoga teachings alike. A practitioner of Ashtanga Yoga’s Advanced A Series Tim is dedicated to Ashtanga’s traditional method. FRIDAY 20 AUGUST

17-19 Integrating Breath and Bandhas in Your Asana Practice 

In this first session with Tim you will locate your internal locks and drop into your breath to free your practice.  Pattabhi Jois used to say, “the Ashtanga practice is a breathing practice – the rest is just bending!”. You will establish yourself firmly in the foundations of breath with a clear physical understanding of the use of the inner body bandhas. You will learn simple breathing to help your body find deep support and true strength, for your mind to settle into one-pointed focus and to free your body. Experience how this ancient tradition holds many life lessons. All levels welcome.

08.00– 10.30 Mysore Style class

Named after the city where Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois developed their yoga method, this is the classic way Ashtanga Yoga is taught. A melting pot of yoga practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced, this class sets out to offer personalised guidance to every practitioner exactly where you need it most. Build a relationship with yourself, your practice and your teacher in this inspiring energy.

13-15.30 Gateway Postures of The Primary Series 

(Bhujapidasana, Kurmasana, Supta Kurmasana)

The Primary Series, Yoga Chikitsa, is meant to heal and strengthen our body and mind, preparing us for a deeper and more subtle asana exploration in the Intermediate Series, Nadi Shodana. But sometimes we get stuck! The leg just won’t go where we want it to go or our knees, wrists or shoulders seems more achy than happy when attempting the higher notes of this series, also called the ‘Gateway Postures’ as they serve as indicators that our body has grown ready for a next level. But what to do when we can’t find our body molding those fancy shapes?  This workshop addresses that issue by focusing on technique, proper alignment and anatomical insights that will help you understand how your body moves and how to progress to the next level of your aptitude. We set up for a detailed experience of these difficult gateway postures, slowly peeling the layers that obstruct our view and motion required to find the freedom and power of  this yoga method. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

13.00 – 15.30 Inversions, Headstands & Arm Balances

In this workshop you will learn practical tools to turn upside down with stability, tranquillity and grace. You will gain a thorough understanding of the anatomical patterns at play in your body while inverted. Detailing the shoulder mechanics helps you integrate your arms, spine, rib-cage and hip to create a solid platform for accessible and pleasurable inversions whether on your head, hands or elbows. We will play with simple to advanced asanas. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

1-DAY yoga master classes with Isabella in Mölle

On Saturday 3 July Isabella is invited to teach a morning and afternoon workshop at Yoga by the Sea, Studio Mölle. It’s the third occasion on which Isabella teaches there and this time focus will be on two themes:

The morning classes continue as usual throughout the summer (with the exception of special temporary schedule changes which are listed under the schedule). The Mysore class on Sundays, however, is shortened to 9-11.00.

After Christmas special workshop: Breath & Bandha

This workshop focuses on the importance of the breath in our yoga practice as well as for our everyday  life and health. You will also be introduced to the basics of the root and abdominal locks – Mula and Uddiyana bandha – how these are linked to the breath and to asana, as well as their function within Ashtanga yoga.

Ashtanga yoga is known for its dynamics and the flow of asanas combined with a sounding breath. The special technique used to synchronize breathing and movement is called vinyasa krama and is unique to Ashtanga yoga. The purpose of yoga is to calm the mind – Yoga citta vritti nirodhah. How we breathe affects how we think and how we feel. If we breathe inadequately or strained, we can neither focus (dhyana) nor be stable. Inadequate breathing is also often contributing to or signal of stress / ill health.

The class will give you a deeper understanding of your yoga practice by improving your relationship to your breath. You will also get a better idea of how good breathing and application of Bandha can create lightness in your practice. We explore different breathing techniques and the application of bandha both in movement and stillness.  The class ends with a guided relaxation.

The class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners except to complete beginners (beginners are referred to our foundation courses). It is recommended not to have eaten before class in order to be able to activate the abdomen and ribcage without feeling full.

NEWSLETTER X-MAS & NEW YEAR 2020/21

Dear yoga friends,

2020 unfortunately didn’t turn out to be the glorious year we’d hoped for; instead it presented us with many challenges and hard times. In order to maintain some sense of normalcy, we decided early on in the pandemic to keep our shala open as a place of peace, recovery and sanity for all our members who needed/wanted to continue to come to class. Keeping our doors open has been a balancing act in safeguarding everyone’s continued mental and physical health and at the same time preventing further spread of Covid-19. It’s only thanks to good teamwork and that you’ve all carefully complied with our precautionary measures, that we’ve managed it so far.

With this newsletter, we want to thank you all for your cooperation,  commitment and support. Together we made it through 2020 and now we approach 2021 with fresh hope and optimism. We’d love to keep seeing you on the yoga mat, either live at the shala or via the screen in our virtual Mysore room.  Below you find information about how we kick out 2020 and welcome 2021 at the shala. The newsletter contains our opening hours and special classes/workshops during the Christmas and New Year holidays as well as a taste of what awaits in January and the spring of 2021.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR’S SCHEDULE

From 24/12 to 3/1, a Christmas & New Year schedule applies with regular Mysore classes and some special workshops. Several of the classes are also available online. Unfortunately, Corona forced us to postpone Matt Ryan’s guest workshop until June 2021, but instead we have added some extra events for everyone who stays at home during the holidays. 27/12: WORKSHOP “BREATH & BANDHA“, 12-14:00 – learn how the breath and body locks can affect your yoga practice (and life in general). Read more and sign up here

28/12: BEGINNERS INTRO class, at 17:15. Isabella gives a quick overview of the Ashtanga yoga basic principles, breathing technique and sun salutations. Following the session, participants have the opportunity to attend any number of Mysore classes for two weeks at no extra cost. A perfect Christmas present for a friend or someone you love. 30/12: 108 SUN SALUTATIONS – charity class, at 17.15 (also online). We end the year in the spirit of giving and traditionally do 108 sun salutations in support of V-Care in Mysore, India. This small charity, which we support  since many years, primarily helps children and young people from the most vulnerable groups in India to get an education and the opportunity to have a better future. Our contribution is even more important in times of lockdown, closed schools and difficulties in earning a living for the poorest in India. Read more about the event and how you can contribute here

– 31/12 NEW YEAR’S YOGA – last class of the year (!). At 9-10:30 Isabella leads a guided Primary series class. Come and end the year of 2020 in the best way and let us together  bring a positive energy into 2021. The class is also broadcast online.

THE SPRING SCHEDULE starts on 4/1-2021 with regular morning Mysore classes. Our evening courses start in week 3 + 4. As a result of Covid-19, we are extending our online teaching for as long as necessary. All Mysore classes are broadcast live via Zoom and several of our extra courses also offer the opportunity for online participation. To participate, a monthly/season card or an online membership is required. In 2021, we also open up for customers with old “klippkort” to use these for online practice (only previously purchased cards). Contact us for more information.

NEW COURSES starting in January 2021:

– PRANAYAMA & CHANTING: Isabella’s pranayama course from last summer returns with an addition of chanting. The course is held on Fridays once a month (also online). Read more here

 YOGA PHILOSOPHY immersion:  a 2part course taught by Isabella and Miho (also online). Participants will get an insight into yoga as a lifestyle and how the postures on the yoga mat can be linked to everyday life. The course combines yoga philosophy in theory and practice. Read more here

We hope for example to hold our annual Christmas potluck brunch in spring time instead. If you feel lonely, the shala is open most days and you can come find company there even if we keep distance between the yoga mats.

Next taster session 13/12 – Introduction to Meditation with Miho Hellén-Halme

In the spring of 2021, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö will run a number of immersion courses where participants will have the opportunity to deepen and improve their own practice on several levels such as yoga anatomy and asana understanding. There will also be an opportunity to develop the mental and spiritual aspect of the practice through an introduction to yoga philosophy and thereafter seated meditation.

In the autumn of 2020, we organise four “taster classes” as an introduction to the 2021 immersion classes:

20/9 Introduction to basic asana techniques (practice and adjusting)

18/10 Introduction to Yoga Anatomy

8/11 Introduction to Yoga Philosophy

13/12 Introduction to Meditation

The taster classes are open to everyone. You can participate in all four or in individual sessions. However, you’ll get the most comprehensive view if you participate in all four. Please note that the taster sessions are not a “quick fix” or a shortcut to learning Ashtanga yoga. Beginners are referred to our foundation courses (1 + 2).

Teachers at the taster sessions are Isabella Nitschke, Sara Björs and Miho Hellén-Halme.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR SCHEDULE 2020/21

During the Christmas and New Year holiday season we have a special schedule in place with slightly altered opening hours. All regular classes are held live at the shala and broadcast via Zoom. We also have a few extra yoga workshops and happenings in the days after Christmas. You can check out all of them on our events page . NEWSLETTER NOV-DEC 2020

We’re already far into the autumn semester, but that does not mean that the classes we have on offer decreases. We still have many interesting courses and events coming up and the plan is to go through with them provided that the Corona pandemic doesn’t prevent us from doing so. Thanks to all the precautions we applied together during the spring/summer we were able to keep our doors open and the goal is to remain open throughout the autumn/winter months too. Since the situation may change quickly we will allow registration for our events but only collect payment once we’re sure that the event can take place. Please read more below for detailed information about what’s happening at the shala.

The increasing infection rate in Skåne has led to us once again having to follow stricter guidelines in order to prevent further spreading of Covid19. Even though many of us are tired of all the concessions that have to be made, we ask for your cooperation in following the regulations by the Public Health Authority as well as our internal rules at the shala (read them here). It is crucial for everyone’s health&safety and in order to prevent any risk of having to close the shala. Should you OR anyone in your household have symptoms; please stay at home until Corona has been excluded via a test. On our side we take every possible measure to ensure your safety and we will also abstain from physical adjustments in the coming weeks. If you have a practice card but have to stay at home due to a family member being unwell, you may practice with us via Zoom at no extra cost (does not apply to klippkort). Anyone who is reluctant to travelling far by public transport or is in a risk group and wants to practice from home can buy our special online membership. We’re extending our online programme (Mysore and some special courses) until the end of the year (possibly longer) so that no one needs to pause their yoga practice. If you have questions about our online classes, get in touch with us.

THE AUTUMN SCHEDULE continues until 23/12 and thereafter we have a two-week Christmas and New Year schedule in place. All schedule changes until 31/12 can be found here. A detailed schedule for the week after New Year’s will be published in due time.

SPECIAL CLASSES in November and December offer the following (places are limited due to Covid19):

YOGA PHILOSOPHY: on 8/11 Isabella teaches an introduction to yoga philosophy and chanting. You may join in person at the shala or online via Zoom. The class is part of four taster classes ahead of an in-depth course starting in 2021. The taster classes are open to everyone – read more and register here. (The fourth and last of our taster sessions takes place in December with the theme of meditation. Information about that session can be found under the same link as above)

YIN YOGA & MEDITATION course led by Miho starts on 10/11. Read more here for info and registration. (the course is also taught via Zoom)

INTRO-sessions for beginners are held on 23/11, and 28/12 respectively. These sessions provide a quick overview of the basic principles of Ashtanga Yoga, breath technique and sun salutations. Following the class participants have the opportunity to attend any number of Mysore classes for two weeks at no extra cost. Info about the first session on 23/11 can be found here. Feel free to tell friends and family. Complete beginner’s courses resume in January 2021.

FRIDAY-FUN: on 27/11 Isabella teaches a special class with the theme Breath& Bandha. The class will give you a better understanding of basic breathing techniques and teaches you how to  access your deep core muscles that help create stability and lightness in yoga practice. OUR ANNUAL POTLUCK BRUNCH will hopefully be possible to arrange on 6/12 at 11am after the guided class. All our yogis are welcome, but due to Corona, we would like you to pre-register so that we can keep track of the number of participants. The brunch is usually very popular and we hope that it will be the same this year. Bring a vegan/vegetarian contribution to the party buffet. If you cannot come to class, you are of course welcome to the brunch anyway. Read more/register here

POST-CHRISTMAS YOGA WORKSHOP with guest teacher Matt Ryan the weekend of 26-27/12. Matt is an experienced Ashtanga yoga teacher and practitioner with roots in England and family ties to Sweden. During his Christmas visit to Sweden, he comes to teach two-day morning Mysore and afternoon classes with different themes. In addition, he will share his knowledge and experience of Zazen meditation. We are very happy that Matt is coming to us with his positive energy! Do not miss this workshop! CHARITY CLASS – on 30/12 we end the year in the spirit of giving and traditionally offer 108 sun salutations for the benefit of the organization V-Care in Mysore, India. We have been supporting this small charity for several years, which primarily helps children and young people belonging to the most vulnerable social groups in India to education and the opportunity for a better future. Your contribution is even more important in these times of lockdown, closed schools and difficulties in earning a living for the poorest in India. “FRIDAY-FUN”: Strength & Flexibility – arm balances and inversions

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; the first session this autumn explores strength and balance in our yoga practice. Quite literally, we look at balancing postures of varied difficulty (standing balances, arm balances, inversions, etc.). Participants are guided through a specific sequence of postures where they get to explore the interplay between strength and flexibility as well as the necessity of breath, dristhi (focus) and bandha (body lock).

The class contains both easier and more advanced asanas and is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but is not suitable for complete beginners. The number of places is limited; pre-registration is required and is done via our partner Medborgarskolan (click the link).
