Introductory session to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners

During the summer of 2020 we give you the opportunity to start an inward journey instead of travelling abroad. On three occasions this summer we’ll have introduction classes to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners (15/6, 13/7 and 17/8)

The class gives you an introduction to the basics of Ashtanga yoga and is suitable for those who have never tried yoga before, but also to those who have already practiced other types of yoga and who want to learn the special method of Ashtanga. The focus of the class is on becoming acquainted with one’s own breathing, learning to synchronize breath and movement (so-called vinyasa krama) as well as the practice of Sun Salutation A + B and some closing postures from the Ashtanga Yoga sequence. You will also get a brief insight into the background and philosophy of yoga, its health benefits for both body and mind as well as practical advice on how to get started with a regular practice.

All participants are offered to take part in two weeks of Mysore classes immediately after the introduction – WITHOUT EXTRA COST. Mysore class is the way Ashtanga yoga traditionally is practiced. Read more about the Mysore classes under class descriptions

The teacher is Isabella Nitschke, Authorized Level II by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India

The class is given in partnership with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration is required and done through Medborgarskolans website (click the link). We have an age limit of 16 years and participants under 18 need the approval of their guardian.

SUMMER SCHEDULE 2020

From 22 June to 31 August 2020 we run a slightly reduced summer schedule, All our classes are taught at the shala AND broadcast live through Zoom simultaneously (except the outdoors pop-up class). To access the online classes you need a valid l online membership – you can read more about this here . Monthly/seasonal cards as well as our special summer card give access to classes both in the shala and online. All cards and prices are available here. To take part in the special summer courses you need to sign up and pay separately. All courses/events are found on our events page. Please remember that we don’t teach on new/full moon  – check all temporary schedule changes here on our news page.

NEWSLETTER SPRING 2020

Dear yogis,

Hope you are all healthy and well. We’re currently experiencing some rather strange times with unimaginable consequences for the future. Stress and uncertainty about the economy/our finances or as a result of social distancing can cause various health problems. We at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö care about your physical and mental well-being and think it is especially important to, at this point in time promote positive ingredients and routines in everyday life that give a sense of normalcy. We therefore choose to keep the shala doors open, but follow the Public Health Authority and Government recommendations closely and stay updated on a daily basis. We ask those of you who come to class to read carefully and follow the guidelines (here) that we’ve introduced for everyone at the shala. And if you are run down or feel the slightest symptoms of infection, please stay at home.

SCHEDULE CHANGES – our regular schedule continues, but unfortunately we’ve had to cancel or postpone all extra events, workshops and guest teacher visits. We are trying to find new dates and our goal is to return to full activity in the autumn. Our hope is to to carry out this summer’s retreat in Kadermo, Finland, as planned. We also want to remind you that in May and June some public holidays take place and you can find all temporary schedule changes on our news page

BEGINNERS COURSES – As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic we’ve had to reduce our beginner’s courses this spring and replace them with introductory sessions. As all extra events are currently on hold, the next possible intro session will take place on 15/6. The class gives a quick overview of the basic principles of Ashtanga yoga, breath and sun salutations. Following the intro session participants have the chance to attend Mysore classes at no additional cost for the following two weeks. This is the traditional way to learn Ashtanga Yoga and we hope you recommend it to friends and family. Information about the upcoming session in June can be found here

CLASSES ONLINE – As long as the shala remains physically open we cannot arrange separate classes online. Instead we offer those who practice from home a few alternatives to maintain discipline and continuity in practice:

Virtual Mysore room via Zoom. Here you can log in and see the Mysore class live from the shala. In this way you have company, get help with motivation for your home practice and some extra energy from the group. The links to the virtual Mysore room via Zoom are published weekly in our private Facebook group for Shala members.

Personal feedback/advice – is also available for home-based practitioners during the period of social distancing. If you have a monthly/seasonal card you can book a 15 minute consultation via Zoom or phone at no extra cost (send your questions in advance). If you have a “klippkort” you use that as a payment. If you don’t have a card, you will be charged separately for the session. Contact us for more info.

Live classes on Facebook – we broadcast all guided classes (half Primary now both Tuesday and Thursday at 17:15-18:45 and full Primary  1 Friday/Sunday a month) in our private Facebook group. You can thus choose whether to participate on site in the studio or from home.

We offer both Mysore via Zoom and guided class via Facebook at no extra cost until further notice. If you are not a member of our private Facebook group, we recommend you request to join in order to get access to all updates as well as to the classes online. You are also welcome to post any ideas or requests for improvement in the group. In case of a temporary closure of the shala due to new government regulations, all classes will be taught via Zoom and only those with monthly/seasonal or klippkort will be offered to join.

SUMMER OPENING HOURS & SUMMER CARD – will be open all summer 2020 with Mysore classes six mornings a week. However, from 22 June to 21 August we won’t offer any evening classes. We’ll also launch a special summer card which gives you access to unlimited practice. The card can be purchased at any time during June-July and is valid for up to two months from the date of purchase, but no longer than 31/8. The card is available to buy on site in the shala.

FINANCES – the crisis we’re currently experiencing will have severe consequences for the financial situation for society as a whole. When many people lose their jobs and incomes overall decrease whilst expenses remain the same or even increase, it will affect us all – the shala as well as its members. Unfortunately, we therefore have to inform you that as long as the shala remains physically open, we cannot pause anyone’s card (this applies to monthly/seasonal cards as all “klippkort” are unlimited in time) unless you are sick, belong to a risk group and need to self-isolate or are in quarantine. We take this measure for the shala to survive even after the pandemic and we ask for your understanding and cooperation in this matter. On our part, we do everything in our ability to facilitate for members (also new ones) in financial difficulty who can’t pay for practice over a certain period of time. In times of hardship it is particularly important to be able to continue your yoga practice and be part of a community. We always offer discounts to unemployed/job seekers, pensioners and students and provide the opportunity to split your invoice into several payments. Under special circumstances, we are also flexible in finding individualized solutions. Please talk to Isabella directly and explain your situation.

SUMMER SCHEDULE & GUEST TEACHER Karolina Z – July 2019

From1-14 July, we are pleased to welcome Karolina Zakrzewska as a guest teacher. On two previous occasions, Karolina has covered classes at our shala and we look forward to seeing and learning from her this summer as well.

Throughout July 2019, we run a special summer schedule that you can  download here SUMMER SCHEDULE 2019  or you may also consult our schedule page. There will be daily morning Mysore class from  Sunday-Friday. In July, all evening classes are cancelled and we make use of the extra light and the early mornings instead.

After 14/7 we have two weeks of self-practice three days a week. From the 17th to 22nd July Sharath R. Jois visits Copenhagen for a week-long workshop. We encourage all our students to come and experience a bit of Mysore on home ground. Read more and register here .

NEWSLETTER MAY/JUNE 2019

We hope you’ve had a good Easter weekend with a chance to enjoy the sunshine. Finally we’ve defrosted and now the physical side of yoga may be a bit easier. Our regular schedule continues until 30 June and in July there’ll be a special summer schedule. In May and June we have many exciting events and special classes with guest teachers to offer all our practitioners, newer and more experienced. May and June also include some public holidays and we’d like to remind you of some temporary schedule changes then (click here).

Early July, we welcome Karolina Zakrzewska as a summer teacher and the second half of the month Sharath Jois visits Copenhagen (info here) for a week’s workshop. Keep reading and you’ll be on top of all that happens at the  school before summer.

A NEW BEGINNERS’ COURSE starts in Malmö on Monday 29/4 (read more here). It is a 6-week course and we’re always happy when you recommend us to your friends. Right now we’d be extra happy if you could motivate some stiff men to join the course and thus help us even out gender gap in our shala.

FRIDAY FUN our alternative after work – continues on 26/4 and 17/5 in Malmö. The theme this semester is basic yoga philosophy and chanting. No previous experience is required. The upcoming two sessions treat ch2 of Yoga Sutras and we continue to learn simple breathing techniques. Register via the event

GUIDED CLASS of both the first and second series in Ashtanga yoga take place in May/June. The next guided primary series is on Sunday 12/5 at 8.45 (followed by tea & talk). Isabella also teaches led Intermediate series on Sunday 19/5 and 16/6 after the regular Mysore class. Please read the requirements for participation here and talk to Isabella before you sign up.

GUEST TEACHERS on June 1-2, we welcome Swedish Gabriel and his Australian wife Nadia. They’ll teach two Master classes in Ashtanga yoga on the theme “Create effortless fluidity and control in your yoga practice”. Learn how to find flow in your practice through bandhas and breath. Find the strength and flexibility in both transitions and asana. Gabriel and Nadia give you  an insight into techniques that make your practice easier. Classes are open for all. SUMMER RETREAT in FINLAND 7-12 July we return to the idyll Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland, an island completely unaffected by the stress of modern society. Join Isabella on a week-long Ashtanga yoga retreat with both morning and afternoon classes. Take the opportunity to unwind, relax, and enjoy yoga, beautiful scenery and fantastic vegetarian food by the best Indian chef Anu flown in straight from Mysore. SUMMER TEACHER Karolina Zakrzewska covers classes from 1-14 July while Isabella is away. Karolina is from Helsingborg but lives in Goa, India where she runs the retreat centre Purple Valley. Karolina has taught at our shala at twice previously and we are delighted to welcome her back. More about Karolina and the summer schedule here

Finally, speaking of Purple Valley, we want to flag that Isabella teaches a retreat there later this autumn from 26/10-8/11. More on our eventspage where you also find a link to Purple Valley. Bookings open on their homepage in May. You don’t want to miss this trip!
