IN-DEPTH COURSE – an immersion into Ashtanga Yoga, spring 2021

This course aims to give the individual practitioner an in-depth understanding of Ashtanga Yoga as a daily practice and philosophy of life. In various modules, the participants have the opportunity to deepen their practice on the physical, mental and philosophical level. The course consists of 4 modules with a total of 14 teaching sessions during the spring of 2021. Teachers on the various modules are Isabella Nitschke, Sara Björs and Miho Hellén-Halme.

MODULE 1, ASANA & ADJUSTMENT TECHNIQUE – 7 sessions

The course takes a deep dive into the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series where participants get to explore the purpose, function and connection of the postures. We do this by examining the mechanisms of each asana, how these can be applied to one’s own body and through helping and adjusting others. By adjusting others, we can often gain additional insight into and understanding of the asanas and our own practice, even if we do not learn for the purpose of teaching. (Teacher: Isabella Nitschke)

MODULE 2, YOGA ANATOMY – 4 sessions

In parallel with the asana technique and adjustment course, we teach a module in yoga anatomy. Participants will learn how an understanding of functional anatomy can be helpful in their own yoga practice and when teaching others. (Teacher: Sara Björs)

MODULE 3, YOGA PHILOSOPHY – 2 sessions

Here the participants are given an introduction to the Patanjali Yoga Sutras and few other important yoga philosophy scriptures. The aim of the module is to give the practitioners an experience of yoga as a holistic practice that is more than just postures on the yoga mat. (Teacher: Isabella Nitschke)

MODULE 4, MEDITATION – 2 sessions (in connection with module 3)

The module is an initiation to seated meditation as part of the holistic system of Ashtanga yoga. The participants get a chance to look at their yoga practice from a different perspective and deepen their practice on a mental level. (Teacher: Miho Hellén-Halme)

Tentative dates:

Module 1: 10/1, 24/1, 14/3, 11/4, 25/4, 9/5, 6/6,

Module 2: 28/2, 28 / 3,18 / 4, 23/5

Module 3 + 4: 7/2, 2/5

Examination /end of term: 13/6

Time: 12-14.45

Price:  7500 SEK (incl. VAT)

Please note that the course is not a “quick fix” or a shortcut to learning the first series of Ashtanga Yoga. The course is NOT for beginners and is only open to those who have regular yoga practice AND who practice at least half of the Primary series (Navasana).

The course consists of 14 sessions between January-June (Sundays) 2021 plus an “examination class” at the end of the course. Each class is about 2.5 hours long with a break. The course is given only in its entirety, not as individual modules.

The course is only open to a limited number of participants. To apply, send an email to info[at]ashtangayogamalmo.se with a short motivation letter where you explain why you want to participate in the course. Deadline for applications is 14 December 2020.

Yin yoga & Meditation – an 8-week course

In September 2020, we launch this 8-week course in yin yoga and meditation on Tuesday evenings.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you take time to explore the sensations in your own body. It can be a good complement to other physical activities such as running and other more dynamic yoga styles and is great if you feel particularly stiff, or if you aspire to learn more about listening to your own body.

In yin yoga you stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with, 5-10 minutes when you have more experience), turn your attention inward and scan your own body to see if there is any tension, while trying to relax using your breath. By doing this you stimulate and stretch the connective tissues which keep all the  body’s muscles and organs together, while at the same time you learn to cultivate tranquility and awareness.  The important thing is not how the postures look from outside, but rather how you feel inside.

At the end of each class, we do a semi-guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes. All are welcome regardless of previous yoga experience!

The course runs on Tuesdays at 17:15 – 18:30, starting on 8 September for a total of 8 weeks. Registration and payment is done via our partner Medborgarskolan Syd (click on the link). Current members/card holders may attend the course using their membership (or klippkort) but you still need to pre-register with Medborgarskolan.

The course is taught by qualified yin yoga teacher Miho Hellén-Halme.

YINYOGA & MEDITATION with Miho, 3 summer classes

During the summer of 2020, Miho teaches three special classes of Yinyoga and meditation. The classes take place on a monthly basis (24/6, 22/7 and 26/8) on site at the shala and online through the virtual meeting tool Zoom. You may attend all or individual sessions.

The teacher, Miho Hellén-Halme, is a qualified Yinyoga teacher and a regular practitioner of Ashtanga yoga.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you take time to explore the sensations in your body. You stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with), turn your attention inward and scan your body to see if there is any tension, while trying to relax using your breath. In this way you stimulate and stretch the connective tissues that keep all the muscles and organs together while at the same time you cultivate tranquillity and awareness.  The visual shape of the posture becomes secondary to how you surrender and focus on inner sensations. This is a perfect complement, both physically and mentally, to more dynamic forms of training such as Ashtanga yoga.

At the end of the class, we will do a semi-guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes. All levels of practitioners are welcome regardless of previous yoga experience!

Please remember to:

– bring a cushion or a blanket (which you can fold and use as a cushion) to sit on during the meditation session. Yoga blocks and smaller blankets/towels can also be good to have.

– as we will mostly sit or lie down, bring a long-sleeved clothes if it is a chilly day.

All classes are held in collaboration with our partner Medborgarskolan. Sign up and pay through their website

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2020

Summer is finally here with the holidays just around the corner. However, this summer will most likely be different from previous years since we are not able to travel as freely as we are used to. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö follows the guidelines of the Public Health Authority and the Government, and has therefore chosen to modify our travel plans with alternative solutions for the summer. Our annual retreat at Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland is postponed until the summer of 2021. Instead, we take vacation close to home with some yoga weekends in Mölle. The shala doors in Malmö are open all summer and we have special offers for both new and old students. Continue reading below for detailed info on all offers and events this summer:

SUMMER SCHEDULE – our regular schedule runs until 21 June, after which it is replaced by a summer schedule until 31 August. You can find the entire summer schedule here. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class) take place in the shala AND are broadcast online via Zoom simultaneously. Please note that as of 1 June, no more classes will be streamed via Facebook. To participate online you need a valid monthly/season card (klippkort do not apply) or our new ONLINE membership which you can read about here. We also offer a special summer card where you can practice for two months with a 45% discount (both on site and online). The card can be purchased any time during June-July and is valid for all our regular classes (not summer specials) up to two months from the date of purchase (however no longer than 31/8.)

SUMMER SPECIALS – This year, in addition to our regular classes, we offer a number of special summer courses and events:

INTRO for beginners on 15/6, 13/7 and 17/8 at 17:15. These introductory sessions provide a quick overview of the Ashtanga basic principles, breath technique and the sun salutations. After the intro session, participants may attend unlimited Mysore classes at no additional cost for the following two weeks. Information about the first session on 15/6 is available here

PRANAYAMA & Breathing Exercises – a course of six sessions held every second Sunday at 11:30 am starting on 14/6. The course is taught by Isabella and takes place both in the shala and via Zoom. More info about the course here

Yin Yoga & Meditation – a special class led by Miho one Wednesday evening a month (24/6, 22/7 and 26/8). You can participate in one or all three classes, on site or via Zoom. Read more about the class here

Pop-up Ashtanga – an outdoors yoga class with Sara. The class will take place at 17:15 on selected Thursdays during the summer (weather permitting). Date and venue will be announced on our Facebook page AND in our closed Facebook group

“HEMESTRA – Vacation at home”: Yoga weekends in Mölle, 4-5 July and 1-2 August. Don’t let the Covid19 travel restrictions make you depressed. Instead, join us for a yoga weekend in Mölle. On two occasions this summer we have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Yoga by the Sea – Studio Mölle. Isabella leads two weekend workshops with Morning Mysore and afternoon class. You can attend one or both weekends. Read more about both weekends on our events page

HEALTH & SAFETY – As long as the Public Health Authority special recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures in place at the shala. As some restrictions are eased across Europe and at home, we will slowly reintroduce SOME physical adjustments in class. With this, we also take the opportunity to introduce so-called consent cards. We are aware that direct touch can be sensitive for reasons other than just covid19, and we hope that these cards will help preserve the safe space we strive to create in our shala. When you see the cards in the shala, please choose one and place it next to your mat so that it is visible to the teacher (Green: yes please help me; Orange: only vocal adjustments please; Red: neither vocal nor physical adjustments today please).

We also ask everyone who comes to class to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) that we have set up for all who enter the shala. If you are unwell or feel the slightest symptoms, please stay at home and recover. Please don’t hesitate to message us if you have any questions or need support in your yoga practice from home.

That’s all for now. Stay tuned in between newsletters by following our pages on social media. If you are not a member of our closed Facebook group for shala practitioners, we recommend that you apply to gain access to daily messages and updates.

Have a lovely summer – but remember to keep  washing your hands!

YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK – charity class

UPDATE: Considering the current situation around COVID-19, this event goes online! A facebook live video will begin around 17:30 the 24th of March, on Ashtanga Yoga Malmö’s facebook page. Please read below for details.

Yoga Stop Traffick (YST) is a global yoga event organized to raise awareness of human trafficking and to raise money for the anti-trafficking organization Odanadi Seva Trust, based in Mysore, India.

Every year in March, participants at yoga schools around the world perform 108 sun salutations in support of Odanadi. 2020 marks the 10th anniversary of the global YST event that takes place on March 15th. We at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö will participate as always, but are organising our contribution to YST on Tuesday 24/3. Instead of 108 sun salutations, we gather for a quiet, introspective evening meditation class that fits well with the new moon that day!

The class will be sent live online on Ashtanga yoga Malmö’s facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/ashtangayogamalmo/

The live video will start around 17:30 (CET). We start with approximately 10 minutes of seated meditation, followed by some easy yoga postures, and finish with another round of seated meditation. The class is taught by Miho Hellén-Halme and will take about 35-40 minutes.

The class is free of charge, but participants are encouraged to contribute financially with an optional amount. As we cannot collect cash this year, we would like to ask each participant to donate directly at Yoga Stops Traffick’s website. Those of you who cannot participate can also contribute this way. https://adventureashram.charitycheckout.co.uk/page07852#!/

Let’s find a moment of calmness together in this time of uncertainty. And if you feel helpless, one of the best way to cope is to help others.

For more information about YST and the worldwide campaign, read here https://www.yogastopstraffick.org/
