Yoga workshop with guest teacher Matt Ryan 27-30 Dec 2021(tentative dates )

Twice in the past year we’ve (sadly) had to postpone  Matt’s visit to Malmö due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We have now agreed on the new (tentative) dates of 27-30th December for his workshop here. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö is very honoured and happy to welcome Matt Ryan to our shala and we look forward to him sharing his long term experience of Ashtanga yoga and Zen Buddhism with us.  Matt will teach Mysore style classes in the mornings followed by afternoon workshops with including both Zen meditation and asana practice. The full programme with exact dates and timings will be announced below soon.

About Matt

Matt Ryan, originally from Manchester, has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over 20 years. In addition to having his own shala in Manchester for many years he has taught yoga around the world, most lately in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, California. In 2020 he returned to the UK where he is now settling in Margate. Matt is married to Lina from Lund, and thus has links to Sweden which he frequently visits to see family and friends.

10 years ago Matt started studying Zen Buddhism which foundations lie in the daily sitting practice of Zazen. When he added Zazen to his Ashtanga practice he noticed an immediate effect resulting in a steadier more focused mind whilst moving through the asana sequences – the end result being a sense of in the moment presence coupled with a strong flexible mind & body. In addition to his experiences from the Ashtanga Yoga practice he will give an introduction to Zazen during his workshop in Malmö.

Matt, although he has studied the Ashtanga practice in Mysore, prefers to keep his teachings completely secular. For more information about Matt visit his website https://mattryan.yoga/about/

COURSE IN YOGA PHILOSOPHY – introduction to the Patanjali Yoga Sutra

This course aims to give the individual yoga practitioner an in-depth understanding of yoga as a daily practice and philosophy of life. It gives participants an introduction to one of the fundamental texts in Ashtanga yoga: the Patanjali Yoga Sutra. The purpose of the course is to provide a greater understanding of yoga as a holistic practice that can be practiced beyond the yoga mat.

Over 8 sessions in the autumn of 2021 (starting on 9 Septemer), participants are given the chance to improve their knowledge of basic yoga philosophy. With special focus on chapters 1 + 2 of the Yoga Sutra, we go through each verse/sutra, discuss its meaning and each Sutra is linked to and can be understood/applied in our everyday lives. We also learn to chant every sutra in Sanskrit as this was the traditional way of learning in ancient times. This way, participants get an insight into how chanting can also be used as a tool for increased concentration, focus and inner well-being.

The course is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but we have a limited number of places. Each session will take place live in the shala and will be broadcast (and recorded) via Zoom. The course is run in partnership with Medborgarskolan and all registrations are done via their website (click the link). Existing season card (1,3,5 months) holders at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö receive a 20% discount on this course (not possible to combine with other discounts)

For any questions and for Zoom-participation please contact the teacher Isabella Nitschke here.

YIN YOGA & Meditation

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you get time to explore the sensations in your own body. It can be a good complement to other physical activities such as running or other more dynamic yoga styles. Yin yoga is great for those who feel particularly stiff, or if you aspire to learn how to listen to your own body.

The course runs on Tuesdays at 17:15 – 18:30, starting on 7 September 2021 for a total of 8 weeks. Registration and payment is done via our partner Medborgarskolan (link available soon). Current members/card holders may attend the course using their membership (or klippkort) but you still need to pre-register with Medborgarskolan. All classes will also be broadcast online via Zoom.

In yin yoga you stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with, 5-10 minutes when you have more experience), turn your attention inward and scan your own body for any tension, while trying to relax by using your breath. In doing this you stimulate and stretch the connective tissues which keep all muscles and organs together, while at the same time you learn to cultivate tranquility and awareness.  The important thing is not how the postures look, but rather how you feel inside.

At the end of each class, we do a semi-guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes. All are welcome regardless of previous yoga experience! The course is taught by Miho Hellén-Halme, certified yin yoga teacher.

Ashtanga yoga foundation/beginner’s course

Beginner’s/Foundation courses cover the basics of Ashtanga yoga and are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who practice other types of yoga but would like to learn Ashtanga thoroughly from scratch. The course runs for 8 weeks and starts on Monday 6 September 2021 at 17:15 and is taught by Isabella Nitschke authorized by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India.

All participants are encouraged to attend Mysore classes in parallel to the course.  One FREE Mysore class per week is included in the course price. Read more about Mysore classes under class descriptions.

We begin with a short introduction to yoga philosophy followed by a gradual learning of the Sun Salutations, the standing asanas (postures) of the Ashtanga yoga primary series as well as some finishing postures. We focus in particular on linking breath and movement in the so called vinyasa krama system. We also cover Bandhas (energy locks in the body) and Drishti (focus). Most importantly, you will learn how to practice and move safely to avoid injury and to build both strength and flexibility over time.

The course is run in cooperation with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration for the course is required and is done via Medborgarskolan (click the link). Please note that we have an age limit of 16 and people younger than 18 need parental approval.

DETAILED PROGRAM

FRIDAY 20 AUGUST

17-19 Integrating Breath and Bandhas in Your Asana Practice

In this first session with Tim you will locate your internal locks and drop into your breath to free your practice.  Pattabhi Jois used to say, “the Ashtanga practice is a breathing practice – the rest is just bending!”. You will establish yourself firmly in the foundations of breath with a clear physical understanding of the use of the inner body bandhas. You will learn simple breathing to help your body find deep support and true strength, for your mind to settle into one-pointed focus and to free your body. Experience how this ancient tradition holds many life lessons. All levels welcome.

19-1930 Q&A

We end the evening with a short Question& Answer with Tim. Bring your questions!

 SATURDAY 21 AUGUST

08.00– 10.30 Mysore Style class

Named after the city where Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois developed their yoga method, this is the classic way Ashtanga Yoga is taught. A melting pot of yoga practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced, this class sets out to offer personalised guidance to every practitioner exactly where you need it most. Build a relationship with yourself, your practice and your teacher in this inspiring energy.

13-15.30 Gateway Postures of The Primary Series

(Bhujapidasana, Kurmasana, Supta Kurmasana)

The Primary Series, Yoga Chikitsa, is meant to heal and strengthen our body and mind, preparing us for a deeper and more subtle asana exploration in the Intermediate Series, Nadi Shodana. But sometimes we get stuck! The leg just won’t go where we want it to go or our knees, wrists or shoulders seems more achy than happy when attempting the higher notes of this series, also called the ‘Gateway Postures’ as they serve as indicators that our body has grown ready for a next level. But what to do when we can’t find our body molding those fancy shapes?  This workshop addresses that issue by focusing on technique, proper alignment and anatomical insights that will help you understand how your body moves and how to progress to the next level of your aptitude. We set up for a detailed experience of these difficult gateway postures, slowly peeling the layers that obstruct our view and motion required to find the freedom and power of  this yoga method. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

SUNDAY 22 AUGUST

08.00– 10.30 Mysore Style class

Named after the city where Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois developed their yoga method, this is is the classic way Ashtanga Yoga is taught. A melting pot of yoga practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced, this class sets out to offer personalized guidance to every practitioner at exactly where you need it most. Build relationship with yourself, your practice and your teacher in this inspiring energy.

13.00 – 15.30 Inversions, Headstands & Arm Balances

In this workshop you will learn practical tools to turn upside down with stability, tranquillity and grace. You will gain a thorough understanding of the anatomical patterns at play in your body while inverted. Detailing the shoulder mechanics helps you integrate your arms, spine, rib-cage and hip to create a solid platform for accessible and pleasurable inversions whether on your head, hands or elbows. We will play with simple to advanced asanas. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

SUMMER COURSE: Pranayama/breathing practice, 6 sessions

It’s the second summer season we run this course which runs for 6 sessions over the summer of 2021. The course takes place on Sundays at 11.15 am immediately after the Mysore or led class the following dates: 6/6, 20/6, 4/7, 11/7, 25/7, 15/8. Participants can choose to attend on-site in the shala or online via Zoom (link to the class is shared by the teacher). Sign up through our partner Medborgarskolan (click the link to register)

The course gives you an introduction to the relationship between breathing and your general well-being. You will learn a number of Pranayama/breathing techniques; we start with easier exercises and advance as the weeks go by. The course is open to all levels of yoga practitioners except for complete beginners (beginners are referred to one of our intro classes).

Pranayama = Prana (life force) + Ayama (extend) means extension of life force. Within yoga philosophy it is explained that the life force is linked to the breath and by taking longer and fewer breaths we can extend our lifespan. Breathing is also an important tool for self-regulation, namely how we react to and manage stress.

How we breathe affects our mental well-being and vice versa. By becoming more aware and getting to know our breath, we can better understand this connection. With the use of special techniques we can learn to master our breathing and thus also affect our mental health in a positive direction.
