NEWSLETTER X-MAS & NEW YEAR 2020/21

Dear yoga friends,

2020 unfortunately didn’t turn out to be the glorious year we’d hoped for; instead it presented us with many challenges and hard times. In order to maintain some sense of normalcy, we decided early on in the pandemic to keep our shala open as a place of peace, recovery and sanity for all our members who needed/wanted to continue to come to class. Keeping our doors open has been a balancing act in safeguarding everyone’s continued mental and physical health and at the same time preventing further spread of Covid-19. It’s only thanks to good teamwork and that you’ve all carefully complied with our precautionary measures, that we’ve managed it so far.

With this newsletter, we want to thank you all for your cooperation,  commitment and support. Together we made it through 2020 and now we approach 2021 with fresh hope and optimism. We’d love to keep seeing you on the yoga mat, either live at the shala or via the screen in our virtual Mysore room.  Below you find information about how we kick out 2020 and welcome 2021 at the shala. The newsletter contains our opening hours and special classes/workshops during the Christmas and New Year holidays as well as a taste of what awaits in January and the spring of 2021.

CHRISTMAS & NEW YEAR’S SCHEDULE

From 24/12 to 3/1, a Christmas & New Year schedule applies with regular Mysore classes and some special workshops. Several of the classes are also available online. Unfortunately, Corona forced us to postpone Matt Ryan’s guest workshop until June 2021, but instead we have added some extra events for everyone who stays at home during the holidays. 27/12: WORKSHOP “BREATH & BANDHA“, 12-14:00 – learn how the breath and body locks can affect your yoga practice (and life in general). Read more and sign up here

28/12: BEGINNERS INTRO class, at 17:15. Isabella gives a quick overview of the Ashtanga yoga basic principles, breathing technique and sun salutations. Following the session, participants have the opportunity to attend any number of Mysore classes for two weeks at no extra cost. A perfect Christmas present for a friend or someone you love. 30/12: 108 SUN SALUTATIONS – charity class, at 17.15 (also online). We end the year in the spirit of giving and traditionally do 108 sun salutations in support of V-Care in Mysore, India. This small charity, which we support  since many years, primarily helps children and young people from the most vulnerable groups in India to get an education and the opportunity to have a better future. Our contribution is even more important in times of lockdown, closed schools and difficulties in earning a living for the poorest in India. Read more about the event and how you can contribute here

– 31/12 NEW YEAR’S YOGA – last class of the year (!). At 9-10:30 Isabella leads a guided Primary series class. Come and end the year of 2020 in the best way and let us together  bring a positive energy into 2021. The class is also broadcast online.

THE SPRING SCHEDULE starts on 4/1-2021 with regular morning Mysore classes. Our evening courses start in week 3 + 4. As a result of Covid-19, we are extending our online teaching for as long as necessary. All Mysore classes are broadcast live via Zoom and several of our extra courses also offer the opportunity for online participation. To participate, a monthly/season card or an online membership is required. In 2021, we also open up for customers with old “klippkort” to use these for online practice (only previously purchased cards). Contact us for more information.

NEW COURSES starting in January 2021:

– PRANAYAMA & CHANTING: Isabella’s pranayama course from last summer returns with an addition of chanting. The course is held on Fridays once a month (also online). Read more here

 YOGA PHILOSOPHY immersion:  a 2part course taught by Isabella and Miho (also online). Participants will get an insight into yoga as a lifestyle and how the postures on the yoga mat can be linked to everyday life. The course combines yoga philosophy in theory and practice. Read more here

YIN YOGA & MEDITATION with Miho continues on Tuesday evenings starting on 19/1. Read more here for info and registration (the course is also held online).

ASHTANGA intro class 11/1 & FOUNDATION COURSE 25/1– for newcomers to Ashtanga. Please share with your friends. Read more about all our foundation courses / intro classes here

– ASHTANGA FOUNDATION LEVEL 2 – with Sara resumes on 21/1 on Thursday evenings. The class/course is suitable for those who have taken a beginner’s course and want to continue the guided class format or those who have had a break from practice and want to refresh their Ashtanga memory. That’s all for now; thank you once again for your participation and commitment during the past year. Our yoga community is very valuable to us and we hope that soon again we’ll be able to organize social gatherings and events where we can meet off the yoga mat. We hope for example to hold our annual Christmas potluck brunch in spring time instead. Take care of yourselves, stay healthy and have a lovely holiday season no matter how you celebrate it this year. If you feel lonely, the shala is open most days and you can come find company there even if we keep distance between the yoga mats.

P.S Until otherwise announced, we follow both the Public Health Authority’s restrictions as well as our internal rules at the shala (read them here before you come to class).

PRACTICE WITH US REMOTELY – online membership

Due to the current Covid19 restrictions the shala we will continue to teach both on site and online for as long as necessary.

All classes – Mysore and guided – take place live at the shala AND are simultaneously streamed via Zoom. This allows for practitioners who live further away and want to avoid public transportation and for those in risk groups to join our classes. To practice with us you need a valid montly/seasonal card OR our special online card which can be purchased for 650 SEK/month (see here). If you have an old “klippkort” that you’d like to use online please contact us.

By purchasing the online card you can participate in all regular Mysore classes and guided classes (full or half primary series) for 30 days. You either purchase the card online through Medborgarskolan or by contacting us. NB! Online cards may only be used for online classes whereas monthly/seasonal cards may be used both in the shala and online. To take part in the special courses or workshops you need to sign up separately and pay extra (not all of these are broadcast online, check in advance).

To join online EVERYONE – whether you have a monthly/seasonal card or an online card has to register weekly to receive the link  to log in.

Registration is done as follows :

Mysore (all week) and full primary (Fri / Sun once a month) register at the latest on Saturdays for the coming week (even if you do not attend all days) – email Isabella: info[at]ashtangayogamalmo.se

Since we use zoom, we will see you and be able to give you personalized instruction. Please make sure the following:

  1. your laptop/tablet video and audio are both set to ‘on’.
  2. that you are positioned horizontally, not vertically with your mat in the camera view. Also, some of you have the camera too close or high/low so that you aren’t really visible (see graphic below).
  3. to see the shala click ‘speaker’ view, to see everyone taking part, click ‘gallery’ view.

“FRIDAY-FUN”: Strength & Flexibility – arm balances and inversions

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; the first session this autumn explores strength and balance in our yoga practice. Quite literally, we look at balancing postures of varied difficulty (standing balances, arm balances, inversions, etc.). Participants are guided through a specific sequence of postures where they get to explore the interplay between strength and flexibility as well as the necessity of breath, dristhi (focus) and bandha (body lock).

The class contains both easier and more advanced asanas and is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but is not suitable for complete beginners. The number of places is limited; pre-registration is required and is done via our partner Medborgarskolan (click the link).

NEWSLETTER AUGUST (AUTUMN) 2020

We hope you’ve had an enjoyable and restful summer on home turf despite Corona-restrictions. The autumn semester is approaching and as long as the Swedish Public Health Agency’s special Covid-19 recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures at the shala in place. We ask everyone who comes to practice to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) we’ve set up for at the shala. As an extra measure, we have limited the number of participants in all courses and workshops during the autumn. In the Mysore room, we keep a distance of at least 1 m between the mats and continue to offer online access via Zoom. To read more about what happens this autumn continue reading below.

THE AUTUMN SCHEDULE officially starts on 1/9 and runs until Christmas. You find an overview on the schedule page. Some changes have been introduced to the evening classes; on Tuesdays Miho teaches a course in Yin Yoga and on Thursdays Sara a beginner’s level 2 / guided half Primary series class/course. Those who have a monthly cards or klippkort may participate in the courses but must pre-register via Medborgarskolan. Click on the links above for more info. MYSORE ONLINE has worked well this summer and we choose to continue to offer this option in the autumn. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class – morning) take place at the shala and virtually via Zoom. To participate online, you need a valid monthly / season card (klippkort does not apply) or an ONLINE membership (see prices).

OPEN HOUSE 6/9 – on this day we open our doors to public and give everyone an opportunity to try Ashtanga and Yin yoga, ask questions and have tea with us teachers. There will also be special offers on the day for those who sign up to new courses/buy practice cards. Our existing members are welcome to the regularly scheduled guided class at 9 am where you can also bring a friend (who has already practiced/practices Ashtanga but is curious about us). After class the open house begins and you are welcome to stay and invite family/friends. Check the schedule for the open house here

NEW BEGINNERS COURSES start in September. Isabella teaches a foundation course on Mondays and Sara a level 2 course on Thursdays. In collaboration with Gunilla Sandberg at Limhamn, we also start courses there on trial. More info about all courses can be found here.

FRIDAY FUN returns one Friday a month with a different theme at each session. The first class on 25/9 focuses on “Strength and flexibility”. Read more here and sign up to secure your place.

IN-DEPTH COURSE – during the past year, Isabella has taught an in-depth course in Ashtanga yoga with the aim for students to understand their practice on a deeper level. In the Autumn of 2020, we invite you to four “taster classes” that we offer in preparation for the next in depth course that starts in January 2021 with Isabella, Sara and Miho as teachers. We have improved the course content and expanded with modules in adjustment technique and asana understanding, anatomy, philosophy and meditation. Curious? Click here for more info.

RENOVATION of the entire house facade at Grangatan and Föreningsgatan starts in August. It is a large project that is expected to last for at least 18 months. There will be scaffolding that partially blocks our entrance and sign. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the scaffolding also needs to be anchored indoors, i.e. partly in our premises. About 15 poles will be placed in the men’s locker room and in the entrance to support the scaffolding’s heavy structure. We do everything we can to ensure that this affects our business and our members as little as possible, but we still ask for your patience and understanding that much of this is beyond our control. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause. Our goal is to continue to keep the shala a stress free zone where everyone can feel safe and welcome.

VACATION AT HOME – Ashtanga Yoga weekend with Isabella in Mölle 1-2 August

Travelling abroad this summer will sadly be limited, but don’t let this stop you. Take the opportunity to journey inwards instead and take a yoga vacation close to home with Isabella. On 1-2 August, Isabella teaches a 2-day weekend workshop in Ashtanga yoga at Yoga by the Sea in Mölle – Studio Mölle. (* this is the second of two yoga weekends in Mölle during the summer – the first will be held on 4-5 July. Read more here. You can participate in one or both)

The weekend includes 2 morning Mysore classes an evening pranayama & meditation session and a Q&A on the Sunday. Room and board is not included in the price.

For participants travelling from afar accommodation may be arranged separately (not included in the price).

TEMPORARY SCHEDULE CHANGES SEPTEMBER 2020

Our autumn schedule runs from 1 September until Christmas (see here). All our classes run live at our shala as well as livestream via Zoom (read more here). Some days we may have altered opening hours or teachers. Below is an overview of planned temporary changes:

SEPTEMBER

TUESDAY 1 SEPTEMBER – Sara covers for Isabella at Morning Mysore 06-08:45am. No self-practice after Mysore this day. Please be done by 08:45.

WEDNESDAY 2 SEPTEMBER – Full moon and we take a break from teaching. Mysore class is cancelled.

SUNDAY 6 SEPTEMBER – Guided Primary Series Class at 9am instead of Mysore. Please be on time. OPEN HOUSE starts at 11am – read more here

THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER – New moon and we take a break from teaching. Morning mysore class is cancelled. (Evening classes run as scheduled)

FRIDAY 18 SEPTEMBER – Guided Primary Series Class at 6.30am instead of Mysore. Please be on time.

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2020

Summer is finally here with the holidays just around the corner. However, this summer will most likely be different from previous years since we are not able to travel as freely as we are used to. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö follows the guidelines of the Public Health Authority and the Government, and has therefore chosen to modify our travel plans with alternative solutions for the summer. Our annual retreat at Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland is postponed until the summer of 2021. Instead, we take vacation close to home with some yoga weekends in Mölle. The shala doors in Malmö are open all summer and we have special offers for both new and old students. Continue reading below for detailed info on all offers and events this summer:

SUMMER SCHEDULE – our regular schedule runs until 21 June, after which it is replaced by a summer schedule until 31 August. You can find the entire summer schedule here. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class) take place in the shala AND are broadcast online via Zoom simultaneously. Please note that as of 1 June, no more classes will be streamed via Facebook. To participate online you need a valid monthly/season card (klippkort do not apply) or our new ONLINE membership which you can read about here. We also offer a special summer card where you can practice for two months with a 45% discount (both on site and online). The card can be purchased any time during June-July and is valid for all our regular classes (not summer specials) up to two months from the date of purchase (however no longer than 31/8.)

SUMMER SPECIALS – This year, in addition to our regular classes, we offer a number of special summer courses and events:

INTRO for beginners on 15/6, 13/7 and 17/8 at 17:15. These introductory sessions provide a quick overview of the Ashtanga basic principles, breath technique and the sun salutations. After the intro session, participants may attend unlimited Mysore classes at no additional cost for the following two weeks. Information about the first session on 15/6 is available here

PRANAYAMA & Breathing Exercises – a course of six sessions held every second Sunday at 11:30 am starting on 14/6. The course is taught by Isabella and takes place both in the shala and via Zoom. More info about the course here

Yin Yoga & Meditation – a special class led by Miho one Wednesday evening a month (24/6, 22/7 and 26/8). You can participate in one or all three classes, on site or via Zoom. Read more about the class here

Pop-up Ashtanga – an outdoors yoga class with Sara. The class will take place at 17:15 on selected Thursdays during the summer (weather permitting). Date and venue will be announced on our Facebook page AND in our closed Facebook group

“HEMESTRA – Vacation at home”: Yoga weekends in Mölle, 4-5 July and 1-2 August. Don’t let the Covid19 travel restrictions make you depressed. Instead, join us for a yoga weekend in Mölle. On two occasions this summer we have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Yoga by the Sea – Studio Mölle. Isabella leads two weekend workshops with Morning Mysore and afternoon class. You can attend one or both weekends. Read more about both weekends on our events page

HEALTH & SAFETY – As long as the Public Health Authority special recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures in place at the shala. As some restrictions are eased across Europe and at home, we will slowly reintroduce SOME physical adjustments in class. With this, we also take the opportunity to introduce so-called consent cards. We are aware that direct touch can be sensitive for reasons other than just covid19, and we hope that these cards will help preserve the safe space we strive to create in our shala. When you see the cards in the shala, please choose one and place it next to your mat so that it is visible to the teacher (Green: yes please help me; Orange: only vocal adjustments please; Red: neither vocal nor physical adjustments today please).

We also ask everyone who comes to class to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) that we have set up for all who enter the shala. If you are unwell or feel the slightest symptoms, please stay at home and recover. Please don’t hesitate to message us if you have any questions or need support in your yoga practice from home.

SUMMER SCHEDULE 2020

From 22 June to 31 August 2020 we run a slightly reduced summer schedule, All our classes are taught at the shala AND broadcast live through Zoom simultaneously (except the outdoors pop-up class). To access the online classes you need a valid l online membership – you can read more about this here . Monthly/seasonal cards as well as our special summer card give access to classes both in the shala and online. All cards and prices are available here. To take part in the special summer courses you need to sign up and pay separately. All courses/events are found on our events page. Please remember that we don’t teach on new/full moon  – check all temporary schedule changes here on our news page.

NEWS FLASH – AUTUMN SCHEDULE SNEAK PEAK

Happy summer holidays to everyone! Hope you’re all having a great summer! I write this news flash during a one-day break after three weeks of intensive work in Stockholm, Finland and Copenhagen. I, Isabella, have spent two of the weeks weeks practicing and helping out at the Sharath Jois European tour and have also taught a retreat in Finland in between. Although it’s been a working month it’s also been full of learning opportunities, time for self-reflection and chances for small breaks and recovery. Now a week’s real holiday (!) is waiting before I resume teaching in August in Malmö.

I hope you also get a chance to recharge your batteries. The weather is about to become really warm  (according to the forecast) and we continue to have a self-practice schedule in place for a couple of week. A heartfelt thanks to Caroline, Sara and Kerstin who open and close during this time and also thanks to Karolina Z who covered classes in the first half of July! On 4 August the regular schedule resumes as Isabella is back to teach (NB. Don’t forget that our classes are as from July taught only in Malmö). FRIDAY-FUN: our special after work class is back on 23 August with asana-based exploration classes once a month. In the first session we focus on getting a better understanding of the hip-region and how to keep our hips and knees healthy in practice. Read more and register here

OPEN-HOUSE: on Sunday 25 August – we open the doors to family, friends and the public to come and enjoy free classes, lectures and to mingle with us to ask questions, have tea and socialize. There will be special offers for new members on the day. Existing members who recruit new members receive a discount on their next class pass (so make sure your friend mentions you name when he/she registers). Doors open at 11.30. Read more here

GUIDED PRIMARY: before the Open House on 25 August we have our monthly guided primary series class at 9am followed by tea and talk. Our existing members are invited to bring a friend who already practices and is familiar with Ashtanga Yoga (not necessary to have completed the whole primary series ) for FREE. The tea and talk will focus on this summer’s events in the Ashtanga Community and those of us who took part on the Sharath European Tour will share our experience.

NEW BEGINNER’S COURSES: start in Malmö in September. We have a regular beginner’s course on Mondays starting on 2/9 (read more here) and a special course for men on Wednesdays starting on 11/9 (read more here).

SPECIAL EVENTS: there are many more events coming up throughout the autumn such as a very special retreat with Isabella at Purple Valley Yoga Centre 26 October-8 November. Focus will be on how yoga can be used to self regulate and hep gain mental balance. This is a unique opportunity not to miss. Read more and book in advance here
