Foundation (beginner’s) course in Ashtanga yoga

Beginner’s/Foundation courses cover the basics of Ashtanga yoga and are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who practice other types of yoga but would like to learn Ashtanga thoroughly from scratch. The course runs for 8 weeks and starts on Monday 14 September 2020  at 17.15 (we take a break during the autumn holiday on 26/10) and is taught by Isabella Nitschke, authorized level 2 by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India.

All participants are encouraged to attend Mysore classes in parallel to the course.  One FREE Mysore class per week is included in the course price. Read more about Mysore classes under class descriptions.

We begin with a short introduction to yoga philosophy followed by a gradual learning of the Sun Salutations, the standing asanas (postures) of the Ashtanga yoga primary series as well as some finishing postures. We focus in particular on linking breath and movement in the so called vinyasa krama system. We also cover Bandhas (energy locks in the body) and Drishti (focus). Most importantly, you will learn how to practice and move safely to avoid injury and to build both strength and flexibility over time.

The course is run in cooperation with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration for the course is required and is done via Medborgarskolan . Please note that we have an age limit of 16 and people younger than 18 need parental approval.

NEWSLETTER AUGUST (AUTUMN) 2020

We hope you’ve had an enjoyable and restful summer on home turf despite Corona-restrictions. The autumn semester is approaching and as long as the Swedish Public Health Agency’s special Covid-19 recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures at the shala in place. We ask everyone who comes to practice to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) we’ve set up for at the shala. As an extra measure, we have limited the number of participants in all courses and workshops during the autumn. In the Mysore room, we keep a distance of at least 1 m between the mats and continue to offer online access via Zoom. To read more about what happens this autumn continue reading below.

THE AUTUMN SCHEDULE officially starts on 1/9 and runs until Christmas. You find an overview on the schedule page. Some changes have been introduced to the evening classes; on Tuesdays Miho teaches a course in Yin Yoga and on Thursdays Sara a beginner’s level 2 / guided half Primary series class/course. Those who have a monthly cards or klippkort may participate in the courses but must pre-register via Medborgarskolan. Click on the links above for more info. MYSORE ONLINE has worked well this summer and we choose to continue to offer this option in the autumn. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class – morning) take place at the shala and virtually via Zoom. To participate online, you need a valid monthly / season card (klippkort does not apply) or an ONLINE membership (see prices).

OPEN HOUSE 6/9 – on this day we open our doors to public and give everyone an opportunity to try Ashtanga and Yin yoga, ask questions and have tea with us teachers. There will also be special offers on the day for those who sign up to new courses/buy practice cards. Our existing members are welcome to the regularly scheduled guided class at 9 am where you can also bring a friend (who has already practiced/practices Ashtanga but is curious about us). After class the open house begins and you are welcome to stay and invite family/friends. Check the schedule for the open house here

NEW BEGINNERS COURSES start in September. Isabella teaches a foundation course on Mondays and Sara a level 2 course on Thursdays. In collaboration with Gunilla Sandberg at Limhamn, we also start courses there on trial. More info about all courses can be found here.

FRIDAY FUN returns one Friday a month with a different theme at each session. The first class on 25/9 focuses on “Strength and flexibility”. Read more here and sign up to secure your place.

IN-DEPTH COURSE – during the past year, Isabella has taught an in-depth course in Ashtanga yoga with the aim for students to understand their practice on a deeper level. In the Autumn of 2020, we invite you to four “taster classes” that we offer in preparation for the next in depth course that starts in January 2021 with Isabella, Sara and Miho as teachers. We have improved the course content and expanded with modules in adjustment technique and asana understanding, anatomy, philosophy and meditation. Curious? Click here for more info.

RENOVATION of the entire house facade at Grangatan and Föreningsgatan starts in August. It is a large project that is expected to last for at least 18 months. There will be scaffolding that partially blocks our entrance and sign. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the scaffolding also needs to be anchored indoors, i.e. partly in our premises. About 15 poles will be placed in the men’s locker room and in the entrance to support the scaffolding’s heavy structure. We do everything we can to ensure that this affects our business and our members as little as possible, but we still ask for your patience and understanding that much of this is beyond our control. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause. Our goal is to continue to keep the shala a stress free zone where everyone can feel safe and welcome.

Introductory session to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners

During the summer of 2020 we give you the opportunity to start an inward journey instead of travelling abroad. On three occasions this summer we’ll have introduction classes to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners (15/6, 13/7 and 17/8)

The class gives you an introduction to the basics of Ashtanga yoga and is suitable for those who have never tried yoga before, but also to those who have already practiced other types of yoga and who want to learn the special method of Ashtanga. The focus of the class is on becoming acquainted with one’s own breathing, learning to synchronize breath and movement (so-called vinyasa krama) as well as the practice of Sun Salutation A + B and some closing postures from the Ashtanga Yoga sequence. You will also get a brief insight into the background and philosophy of yoga, its health benefits for both body and mind as well as practical advice on how to get started with a regular practice.

All participants are offered to take part in two weeks of Mysore classes immediately after the introduction – WITHOUT EXTRA COST. Mysore class is the way Ashtanga yoga traditionally is practiced. Read more about the Mysore classes under class descriptions

The teacher is Isabella Nitschke, Authorized Level II by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India

VACATION AT HOME – Ashtanga Yoga weekend with Isabella in Mölle 1-2 August

Travelling abroad this summer will sadly be limited, but don’t let this stop you. Take the opportunity to journey inwards instead and take a yoga vacation close to home with Isabella. On 1-2 August, Isabella teaches a 2-day weekend workshop in Ashtanga yoga at Yoga by the Sea in Mölle – Studio Mölle. (* this is the second of two yoga weekends in Mölle during the summer – the first will be held on 4-5 July. Read more here. You can participate in one or both)

The weekend includes 2 morning Mysore classes an evening pranayama & meditation session and a Q&A on the Sunday. Room and board is not included in the price.

TEMPORARY SCHEDULE CHANGES SEPTEMBER 2020

Our autumn schedule runs from 1 September until Christmas (see here). All our classes run live at our shala as well as livestream via Zoom (read more here). Some days we may have altered opening hours or teachers. Below is an overview of planned temporary changes:

SEPTEMBER

TUESDAY 1 SEPTEMBER – Sara covers for Isabella at Morning Mysore 06-08:45am. No self-practice after Mysore this day. Please be done by 08:45.

WEDNESDAY 2 SEPTEMBER – Full moon and we take a break from teaching. Mysore class is cancelled.

SUNDAY 6 SEPTEMBER – Guided Primary Series Class at 9am instead of Mysore. Please be on time. OPEN HOUSE starts at 11am – read more here

THURSDAY 17 SEPTEMBER – New moon and we take a break from teaching. Morning mysore class is cancelled. (Evening classes run as scheduled)

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2020

Summer is finally here with the holidays just around the corner. However, this summer will most likely be different from previous years since we are not able to travel as freely as we are used to. Ashtanga Yoga Malmö follows the guidelines of the Public Health Authority and the Government, and has therefore chosen to modify our travel plans with alternative solutions for the summer. Our annual retreat at Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland is postponed until the summer of 2021. Instead, we take vacation close to home with some yoga weekends in Mölle. The shala doors in Malmö are open all summer and we have special offers for both new and old students. Continue reading below for detailed info on all offers and events this summer:

SUMMER SCHEDULE – our regular schedule runs until 21 June, after which it is replaced by a summer schedule until 31 August. You can find the entire summer schedule here. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class) take place in the shala AND are broadcast online via Zoom simultaneously. Please note that as of 1 June, no more classes will be streamed via Facebook. To participate online you need a valid monthly/season card (klippkort do not apply) or our new ONLINE membership which you can read about here. We also offer a special summer card where you can practice for two months with a 45% discount (both on site and online). The card can be purchased any time during June-July and is valid for all our regular classes (not summer specials) up to two months from the date of purchase (however no longer than 31/8.)

SUMMER SPECIALS – This year, in addition to our regular classes, we offer a number of special summer courses and events:

INTRO for beginners on 15/6, 13/7 and 17/8 at 17:15. These introductory sessions provide a quick overview of the Ashtanga basic principles, breath technique and the sun salutations. After the intro session, participants may attend unlimited Mysore classes at no additional cost for the following two weeks. Information about the first session on 15/6 is available here

PRANAYAMA & Breathing Exercises – a course of six sessions held every second Sunday at 11:30 am starting on 14/6. The course is taught by Isabella and takes place both in the shala and via Zoom. More info about the course here

Yin Yoga & Meditation – a special class led by Miho one Wednesday evening a month (24/6, 22/7 and 26/8). You can participate in one or all three classes, on site or via Zoom. Read more about the class here

Pop-up Ashtanga – an outdoors yoga class with Sara. The class will take place at 17:15 on selected Thursdays during the summer (weather permitting). Date and venue will be announced on our Facebook page AND in our closed Facebook group

“HEMESTRA – Vacation at home”: Yoga weekends in Mölle, 4-5 July and 1-2 August. Don’t let the Covid19 travel restrictions make you depressed. Instead, join us for a yoga weekend in Mölle. On two occasions this summer we have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Yoga by the Sea – Studio Mölle. Isabella leads two weekend workshops with Morning Mysore and afternoon class. You can attend one or both weekends. Read more about both weekends on our events page

HEALTH & SAFETY – As long as the Public Health Authority special recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures in place at the shala. As some restrictions are eased across Europe and at home, we will slowly reintroduce SOME physical adjustments in class. With this, we also take the opportunity to introduce so-called consent cards. We are aware that direct touch can be sensitive for reasons other than just covid19, and we hope that these cards will help preserve the safe space we strive to create in our shala. When you see the cards in the shala, please choose one and place it next to your mat so that it is visible to the teacher (Green: yes please help me; Orange: only vocal adjustments please; Red: neither vocal nor physical adjustments today please).

We also ask everyone who comes to class to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) that we have set up for all who enter the shala. If you are unwell or feel the slightest symptoms, please stay at home and recover. Please don’t hesitate to message us if you have any questions or need support in your yoga practice from home.

TEMPORARY SCHEDULE CHANGES MARCH – APRIL 2020

In March and April 2020, the following temporary schedule changes are planned to take place:

MARCH

SUNDAY 8 MARCH  – no Mysore class due to full moon and a weekend workshop with Måns Broo. During the weekend with Måns (7 + 8 March) we are open for self-practice (unassisted) from 6.30-8.30. All our existing students are welcome then (NB! Both Saturday and Sunday). You can read more about the weekend workshop here

TUESDAY 24 MARCH – new moon ie no Mysore classes this day. In the evening at 5.30 pm, Miho leads the charity event YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK. Read more about this here

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020

This newsletter hopefully reaches you ahead of Valentine’s Day and we at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö would like to send you some special thought on this particular day. Your trust and dedication means a lot to us as we do our best to create a safe and pleasant environment in the shala where you can always be yourself no matter what.

We would also like to send a reminder that on Friday 14 February there’s a guided Primary Series class at 6.30am. Since the start of the year we have introduced more guided classes and we have extended our morning opening hours with so-called self-practice (unassisted) from 8.45-10.30am. That way, you still have a chance to practice even if you work late hours or don’t hear your alarm on time. Read more about the extended class schedule and opening hours here.

Please also note that in February during w 8, the winter holiday, all our evening classes are cancelled. In February and March, several full/new moons fall on Sundays and we don’t teach then. Don’t forget to double check in order to avoid arriving at the shala unnecessarily. This and other temporary schedule changes are always found on our news page which it is worth visiting regularly.

NEW COURSES – On 2nd March we start our next foundation course in Ashtanga yoga. The course is suitable for people with no prior experience of yoga as well as people who have tried other types of yoga but want to learn the basics of the Ashtanga system thoroughly. More info about the course and how to register can be found here. 

Early March, we also launch a new course in Yin Yoga & Meditation taught by Miho. The course runs on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone regardless of experience. Our existing members can attend the course through their monthly/season cards. “Klippkort” may also be used as payment BUT everyone must register beforehand via our partner Medborgarskolan. GUEST TEACHERS – This spring we have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge of other aspects of yoga besides the physical practice, as we on two occasions have the honour of welcoming renowned experts in yoga philosophy and chanting. On 7-8 March, Måns Broo, associate professor of religious science at Turku Academy, visits Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to teach a weekend course on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Måns is the first to translate the above-mentioned text directly from Sanskrit to Swedish and to study with him is a unique opportunity. During the weekend with Måns, all other classes are cancelled but self-practice will be offered early in the morning before the course. Read more and register here (the course is held in Swedish)

On 8-9 April, we welcome Laksmish Bhat, teacher of Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and mantra chanting at the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore. Laskmish will give an introduction to the yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika and teach mantra chanting. We also get the opportunity to participate in a traditional Ganesha puja (ceremony). Laksmish’s visit is part of a teaching tour he does in Europe and his visit to Malmö is arranged in collaboration with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen where he will teach before coming to us. FRIDAY-FUN – our monthly alternative after-work class returns on 28 February when Miho teaches a class of yin yoga & meditation (read more here). In March, Friday-fun maintains the slower pace with the theme “recovery and mindfulness” – a class taught by Isabella on 20 March. You find all our extra workshops, events with guest teachers and retreats on our event page.

There you’ll also find this year’s YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK, a worldwide charity class for the benefit of the organisation Odanadi. Odanadi works against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children in Mysore and the state of Karnataka, India. This year is the 10th anniversary of YST and our event takes place on 24 March (which is a new moon day and all other classes are cancelled). Ashtanga Yoga Malmö has been involved in YST since the start in 2010 and has participated every year with the exception of one. Read more about the class and the cause here

TIM FELDMANN – lastly, we would like to inform you that the guest workshop with Tim Feldmann, which was scheduled for 21-23 August unfortunately has been postponed until next year. Many of you have asked what happened and it is due to unexpected commitments in Miami that Tim has asked to postpone his visit until August 2021, more specifically to weekend of the 20-22nd. (Tim and Kino have bought a large new ware house to be renovated into a yoga centre opening later tin 2020). The workshop will be posted on the website again, but we won’t take registrations before the second half of 2020.

Please remember that if you do get bedridden for more than two weeks we can pause the card (a note from your doctor is needed though). EXTENDED SCHEDULE & more guided classes

This spring we extend our morning opening hours to give late workers or late sleepers a chance to practice too. As from 15th January our existing students may come for (unassisted) self-practice from 8.45-10.30. It is of course also possible to come and start  practicing during the Mysore class and finish during the hours of self-practice.  Self-practice means that you do your asana practice but that there is no-one to assist or guide you.  Please note that the teacher stops teaching at 8.45 and after this there will be no adjustments. Please also respect that you have to be showered and finished by the latest at 10.30 as there are classes after or the cleaner needs access to the room (N.B. self-practice is only available when Isabella is teaching).  Click here to see the full spring schedule

In 2020 we also add more guided classes to the schedule. We’ll do full guided Primary Series class twice a month; once on Fridays and once on Sundays. Take note of all the dates so that you’re not late for class (see picture below or the schedule page – link above). On Fridays you may come already at 6am to meditate or do breathing practice before class; on Sundays we have Tea&Talk after class.

On Tuesday evenings Miho teaches a weekly guided half Primary series at 17.15-18.45. This class suits anyone who wants more guidance of half the series until Navasana. It’s perfect if you’ve just completed a beginners course and/or if you want a better understanding of the correct vinyasa.

NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2020

Dear yogis,

We at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö want to wish you a happy holiday season and all the best for 2020. Our doors continue to be open but the weeks from Christmas to New Year’s (Christmas Eve 24/12 through 6/1) our opening hours are slightly reduced. You find the entire Christmas and New Year’s schedule here. During these two weeks we also have some special happenings in the shala and in other places which you can read about below. Our regular classes resume on 7 January with some new additions and minor changes to the schedule. Between 7-9 January we’ll get a new floor installed in the shala and the morning Mysore classes will therefore be held in the dance studio. Due to the renovations our evening classes on 7+9th January are cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

NEW YEARS YOGA – on New Year’s Eve Isabella teaches the last class of the year, a guided Primary series at 9-10.30am. The shala re-opens  on 2nd January with Morning Mysore at 06am (Miho). Simultaneously Isabella teaches a mini-retreat in Mölle  2-5 January at the cozy Studio Yoga by the Sea. The four-day workshop provides a chance for a fresh start and immersion into Ashtanga yoga. GUEST TEACHER – Jens Bache from Astanga Yoga Copenhagen returns to Malmö to teach a guided Primary series class on 5 January. After class, he’ll give a talk on his research on an important Ashtanga Yoga text that he discovered in the library of Mysore.  Last year Jens’ class was full so don’t miss the chance to practice with him this time and to listen to his interesting presentation. THE SPRING SCHEDULE starts on 7 January with some small changes including a few more guided classes. The Mysore class on Tuesday evenings will be replaced by a guided HALF Primary series starting at 17.15. We will also offer a guided class of FULL Primary series twice a month – once on a Friday morning 06.30-08.00 and once on a Sunday morning 9-10.30. NEW BEGINNERS COURSES start on 13 January (registration  and information here). If you know someone who needs (wants) to fulfill their New Year’s resolution to start a yoga practice please don’t hesitate to recommend us!

OTHER COURSES coming up next year include a course in “Yin Yoga & meditation” with Miho (starting in March – info here); “Anatomy from a yoga perspective” with Sara (starting in January – see here) as well as a whole weekend of Yoga philosophy and Yoga Sutras with guest teacher Måns Broo from Åbo Academy in Finland on 7-8 March (more info here). FRIDAY-FUN – our alternative after-work returns on two occasions in January 2020. On 10/1, Isabella teaches a special class on safe back bending technique (only a few places left – sign up here). AND on 24/1 Miho teaches a class in yin yoga & meditation (read more here). As from February we resume Friday-fun on a monthly basis.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS – lastly we need to inform you that as from 2020 we have to raise the price for our different practice cards. Our prices have been the same since the start in 2013 but now we unfortunately have to make some adjustments due to increased expenses for the shala. We ask for your understanding and cooperation. We of course remain flexible with regards to splitting your invoices into several installments and will continue to give discounts to students, pensioners and those on sick leave.
