ASHTANGA YOGA SUMMER RETREAT at KADERMO CONSCIOUS LIVING

In July 2021, we will finally return to Kadermo Conscious Living near Hanko, Finland. Isabella has previously taught two summer retreats at Kadermo, but in 2020 we were forced to take a break due to the Covid19 pandemic. On July 4-9, 2021, Isabella will teach a week-long Ashtanga yoga retreat open to all levels of practitioners. Welcome!

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

Kadermo Island is situated a couple of hours from Helsinki and is easy to get to by train directly from the airport. The retreat centre offers a unique opportunity to experience yoga in a peaceful, untouched and idyllic setting. There are no shops or cars and hardly any people on the island. The retreat is set in a protected oak forest area where some of the trees are 500 years old.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga retreat is the home of senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Stefan Engström. He was born on the island and founded the retreat centre in 1994. Since then people from all over the world have been coming together to practice yoga and conscious self-development with Stefan and guest teachers.

Weekly programme
The week includes two daily yoga classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All yoga classes during the week are taught by Isabella Nitschke,  authorised (level2) ashtanga yoga teacher. There are two yoga halls available with plenty of room for both asana and quiet practices.

Upon arrival on the Sunday evening we’ll gather for a welcome and introduction session followed by dinner.

In the mornings there will be Mysore style class for more the more seasoned practitioners and depending on the level of participants there may be the opportunity for more guided teaching. Before morning asana class we practice silence and students may may do their own meditation and breathing practices in the meditation hall.

Afternoon class are held16.00-18.30. This class gives an opportunity for Isabella to help you deepen your understanding of the practice by looking at asana technique, yoga philosophy and chanting. Each class will have a different theme depending on the participants’ needs but will also include some easy pranayama and relaxation techniques. A light dinner is served at 19.00.

The Facilities

Students are accommodated in various places on the island, there is a two-storey summer house on a stunning rocky area overlooking the sea which is 10 mins walk from the yoga shala, there are also rooms the winter house which is closer to the yoga shala. These are built in an old fashioned traditional villa style that was common in the twenties.  All toilets are composting and showers are eco-friendly.

We enjoy vegetarian lunch and dinner cooked by the globally adored resident chef Anu from Anu’s Cafe in Mysore. Herbal teas are available all day. The café is also open straight after morning practice for coffee and smoothies (not included in the price). After lunch you have free time to explore the surroundings, walk, swim, go canoeing, read a great variety of yoga books from the library or enjoy the Finnish sauna.

Booking

All reservations and payments are done through Stefan at Kadermo Conscious Living by email Stefan@Kadermo.fi . The number of participants is limited in order to give everyone a personal and special experience of their time on the island. The retreat centre retreats all summer long and there are discount options for those wanting to stay more than one week. For more information and details about the summer programme please visit the Kadermo Conscious Living website. For questions about the yoga classes or your practice please email Isabella.

We look forward to welcoming you this summer!

IN-DEPTH COURSE – an immersion into Ashtanga Yoga, spring 2021

This course aims to give the individual practitioner an in-depth understanding of Ashtanga Yoga as a daily practice and philosophy of life. In various modules, the participants have the opportunity to deepen their practice on the physical, mental and philosophical level. The course consists of 4 modules with a total of 14 teaching sessions during the spring of 2021. Teachers on the various modules are Isabella Nitschke, Sara Björs and Miho Hellén-Halme.

MODULE 1, ASANA & ADJUSTMENT TECHNIQUE – 7 sessions

The course takes a deep dive into the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series where participants get to explore the purpose, function and connection of the postures. We do this by examining the mechanisms of each asana, how these can be applied to one’s own body and through helping and adjusting others. By adjusting others, we can often gain additional insight into and understanding of the asanas and our own practice, even if we do not learn for the purpose of teaching. (Teacher: Isabella Nitschke)

MODULE 2, YOGA ANATOMY – 4 sessions

In parallel with the asana technique and adjustment course, we teach a module in yoga anatomy. Participants will learn how an understanding of functional anatomy can be helpful in their own yoga practice and when teaching others. (Teacher: Sara Björs)

MODULE 3, YOGA PHILOSOPHY – 2 sessions

Here the participants are given an introduction to the Patanjali Yoga Sutras and few other important yoga philosophy scriptures. The aim of the module is to give the practitioners an experience of yoga as a holistic practice that is more than just postures on the yoga mat. (Teacher: Isabella Nitschke)

MODULE 4, MEDITATION – 2 sessions (in connection with module 3)

The module is an initiation to seated meditation as part of the holistic system of Ashtanga yoga. The participants get a chance to look at their yoga practice from a different perspective and deepen their practice on a mental level. (Teacher: Miho Hellén-Halme)

Tentative dates:

Module 1: 10/1, 24/1, 14/3, 11/4, 25/4, 9/5, 6/6,

Module 2: 28/2, 28 / 3,18 / 4, 23/5

Module 3 + 4: 7/2, 2/5

Examination /end of term: 13/6

Time: 12-14.45

Price:  7500 SEK (incl. VAT)

Please note that the course is not a “quick fix” or a shortcut to learning the first series of Ashtanga Yoga. The course is NOT for beginners and is only open to those who have regular yoga practice AND who practice at least half of the Primary series (Navasana).

The course consists of 14 sessions between January-June (Sundays) 2021 plus an “examination class” at the end of the course. Each class is about 2.5 hours long with a break. The course is given only in its entirety, not as individual modules.

The course is only open to a limited number of participants. To apply, send an email to info[at]ashtangayogamalmo.se with a short motivation letter where you explain why you want to participate in the course. Deadline for applications is 14 December 2020.

“FRIDAY-FUN”: Breath & Bandha

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; this month we focus on breath and bandha (body locks)

Ashtanga yoga is known for its dynamics and the flow of asanas combined with a sounding breath. The special technique used to synchronize breathing and movement is called vinyasa krama and is unique to Ashtanga yoga.

The purpose of yoga is to calm the mind – Yoga citta vritti nirodhah. How we breathe affects how we think and how we feel. If we breathe inadequately or strained, we can neither focus (dhyana) nor be stable. Inadequate breathing is also often contributing to or signal of stress / ill health.

The class focuses on the importance of breathing in our asana practice as well as for our everyday health. You will also be introduced to the basics of the root and abdominal locks – Mula and Uddiyana bandha – how these are linked to the breath and asanas. The class will give you a deeper understanding of your yoga practice by improving your relationship to your breath. We explore different breathing techniques both in movement and stillness and end with a guided relaxation.

The class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners except to complete beginners (beginners are referred to our foundation courses)

The number of places is limited; pre-registration is required and is done via our partner Medborgarskolan (click the link). The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, Authorised Ashtanga Yoga Teacher (Level II) by Sharath Jois, Mysore, India. Read more about Isabella on our teacher’s page www.ashtangayogamalmo.se/en/larare

“FRIDAY-FUN”: Introduction to the Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; and this month we focus on Nadi Shodana –the second series of Ashtanga Yoga (Intermediate Series).

The class gives an introduction the Intermediate Series of Ashtanga Yoga. We look at the various components of the series with blocks of asanas such as backbends, “hip openers”, arm balances and inversions. After a “warm-up” where the participants are guided through sun salutations and standing postures, we go explore the traditional “count” and the thread of asanas and how to approach them.

The class requires participants to have a regular yoga practice (not beginners) in Ashtanga yoga. Most importantly, participants should be comfortable and proficient with the entire Primary Series and preferably already practice some of the first asanas of the Intermediate series. Stability in headstand is also required. If you’re unsure whether the class is suitable for you, please contact Isabella before you sign up.

“FRIDAY-FUN”: Strength & Flexibility – arm balances and inversions

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; the first session this autumn explores strength and balance in our yoga practice. Quite literally, we look at balancing postures of varied difficulty (standing balances, arm balances, inversions, etc.). Participants are guided through a specific sequence of postures where they get to explore the interplay between strength and flexibility as well as the necessity of breath, dristhi (focus) and bandha (body lock).

The class contains both easier and more advanced asanas and is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but is not suitable for complete beginners.

TASTER SESSIONS autumn 2020: in preparation for our 2021 in-depth course

4-taster sessions on Sundays autumn 2020: 20/9, 18/10, 8/11, 13/12

In the spring of 2021 (Jan-Jun), Ashtanga Yoga Malmö will run a 6-month long in-depth course in Ashtanga Yoga, where participants will have the opportunity to deepen and improve their own practice on several levels. We take a deep dive into the asanas of the Primary series where the participants, among other things, learn to adjust each other in order to expand their understanding of the postures, their purpose and mechanics as well as how different people’s bodies work compared to their own. In parallel with the adjustment sessions, a module in yoga anatomy is taught as a theoretical and practical complement. The in-depth course also gives participants an opportunity to develop the mental and spiritual aspect of the practice through an introduction to seated meditation. Furthermore, the 6-months course also includes two sessions of yoga philosophy and chanting in order to give participants a holistic understanding of yoga not only as a physical practice. (read more about the 2021 course here)

In the autumn of 2020, we organise four “taster classes” as an introduction to the 2021 in-depth course:

20/9 Introduction to basic asana techniques (practice and adjusting)

18/10 Introduction to Yoga Anatomy

8/11 Introduction to Yoga Philosophy

13/12 Introduction to Meditation

Time: 12-14.45

Price: SEK 250 (single class), SEK 800 (all four sessions)

Registration: contact us here (limited number of places)

The taster classes are open to everyone, while 2021 in-depth course only targets those who have regular yoga practice and who practice at least half of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series (until Navasana). You can participate in all four or in individual sessions. However, you’ll get the most comprehensive view if you participate in all four. Students who have taken all four taster sessions are given priority for admission to the 2021 in depth-course.

Please note that neither the taster sessions nor the in-depth course are a “quick fix” or a shortcut to learning Ashtanga yoga. Beginners are referred to our foundation courses (1 + 2).

Teachers at the taster sessions as well as the on-depth course, are Isabella Nitschke, Sara Björs and Miho Hellén-Halme.

Foundation (beginner’s) course in Ashtanga yoga

Beginner’s/Foundation courses cover the basics of Ashtanga yoga and are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who practice other types of yoga but would like to learn Ashtanga thoroughly from scratch. The course runs for 8 weeks and starts on Monday 14 September 2020  at 17.15 (we take a break during the autumn holiday on 26/10) and is taught by Isabella Nitschke, authorized level 2 by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India.

All participants are encouraged to attend Mysore classes in parallel to the course.  One FREE Mysore class per week is included in the course price. Read more about Mysore classes under class descriptions.

We begin with a short introduction to yoga philosophy followed by a gradual learning of the Sun Salutations, the standing asanas (postures) of the Ashtanga yoga primary series as well as some finishing postures. We focus in particular on linking breath and movement in the so called vinyasa krama system. We also cover Bandhas (energy locks in the body) and Drishti (focus). Most importantly, you will learn how to practice and move safely to avoid injury and to build both strength and flexibility over time.

The course is run in cooperation with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration for the course is required and is done via Medborgarskolan . Please note that we have an age limit of 16 and people younger than 18 need parental approval.

NEWSLETTER AUGUST (AUTUMN) 2020

We hope you’ve had an enjoyable and restful summer on home turf despite Corona-restrictions. The autumn semester is approaching and as long as the Swedish Public Health Agency’s special Covid-19 recommendations apply, we remain cautious and keep all safety measures at the shala in place. We ask everyone who comes to practice to carefully read and follow the guidelines (here) we’ve set up for at the shala. As an extra measure, we have limited the number of participants in all courses and workshops during the autumn. In the Mysore room, we keep a distance of at least 1 m between the mats and continue to offer online access via Zoom. To read more about what happens this autumn continue reading below.

THE AUTUMN SCHEDULE officially starts on 1/9 and runs until Christmas. You find an overview on the schedule page. Some changes have been introduced to the evening classes; on Tuesdays Miho teaches a course in Yin Yoga and on Thursdays Sara a beginner’s level 2 / guided half Primary series class/course. Those who have a monthly cards or klippkort may participate in the courses but must pre-register via Medborgarskolan. Click on the links above for more info. Any temporary schedule changes are available on our News/blog page

MYSORE ONLINE has worked well this summer and we choose to continue to offer this option in the autumn. All our regular classes (Mysore and guided class – morning) take place at the shala and virtually via Zoom. To participate online, you need a valid monthly / season card (klippkort does not apply) or an ONLINE membership (see prices).

OPEN HOUSE 6/9 – on this day we open our doors to public and give everyone an opportunity to try Ashtanga and Yin yoga, ask questions and have tea with us teachers. There will also be special offers on the day for those who sign up to new courses/buy practice cards. Our existing members are welcome to the regularly scheduled guided class at 9 am where you can also bring a friend (who has already practiced/practices Ashtanga but is curious about us). After class the open house begins and you are welcome to stay and invite family/friends. Check the schedule for the open house here

NEW BEGINNERS COURSES start in September. Isabella teaches a foundation course on Mondays and Sara a level 2 course on Thursdays. In collaboration with Gunilla Sandberg at Limhamn, we also start courses there on trial. More info about all courses can be found here.

FRIDAY FUN returns one Friday a month with a different theme at each session. The first class on 25/9 focuses on “Strength and flexibility”. Read more here and sign up to secure your place.

IN-DEPTH COURSE – during the past year, Isabella has taught an in-depth course in Ashtanga yoga with the aim for students to understand their practice on a deeper level. In the Autumn of 2020, we invite you to four “taster classes” that we offer in preparation for the next in depth course that starts in January 2021 with Isabella, Sara and Miho as teachers. We have improved the course content and expanded with modules in adjustment technique and asana understanding, anatomy, philosophy and meditation. Curious? Click here for more info.

RENOVATION of the entire house facade at Grangatan and Föreningsgatan starts in August. It is a large project that is expected to last for at least 18 months. There will be scaffolding that partially blocks our entrance and sign. Unfortunately, we have been informed that the scaffolding also needs to be anchored indoors, i.e. partly in our premises. About 15 poles will be placed in the men’s locker room and in the entrance to support the scaffolding’s heavy structure. We do everything we can to ensure that this affects our business and our members as little as possible, but we still ask for your patience and understanding that much of this is beyond our control. We apologize in advance for any inconvenience the works may cause. Our goal is to continue to keep the shala a stress free zone where everyone can feel safe and welcome.

That’s all for now. Please make sure you stay updated between the newsletters by following our pages on social media. If you are not a member of our private Facebook group, we recommend that you apply to access regular news and updates.

Welcome back from your holidays, sun and swimming but please keep washing your hands!

You will also get a brief insight into the background and philosophy of yoga, its health benefits for both body and mind as well as practical advice on how to get started with a regular practice.

All participants are offered to take part in two weeks of Mysore classes immediately after the introduction – WITHOUT EXTRA COST. Mysore class is the way Ashtanga yoga traditionally is practiced. Read more about the Mysore classes under class descriptions
