This course is suitable for those who’ve taken a beginner’s course at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö and/or at another shala and who wish to continue with guided classes instead of, or in parallel with, Mysore classes.
It is also suitable for those who prefer to practice guided class in a slower pace or need more time to go through the positions with instructions. We also recommend the course to students who’ve had a break from their practice and need to refresh their memory.
The course starts on Thursday 17 September and runs for 10 weeks with possibility to extend. The teacher is Sara Björs, authorised Ashtanga yoga teacher by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India.
At every session the teacher will guide you through the standing sequence and the first seated postures of the Ashtanga Yoga Primary Series. Each class will also focus on how to prepare for particularly challenging asanas such as back bends and shoulder stand. The application of breathing technique, bandha, muscle activation and alignment will be emphasized throughout the course to give you a good foundation for your practice. The pace is slower than in a traditionally guided class and the teacher will demonstrate asanas if needed. The aim of the course is to facilitate your learning of the breathing technique, vinyasa and sequence, to make you more independent in your yoga practice.
Attendees should have learnt the basics through a beginner’s course in Ashtanga yoga.
You can sign up for the whole course or drop-in with 10 times “klippkort” or our monthly/seasonal cards. Pre-registration is mandatory and needs to be done trhough Medborgarskolan (see below)
It’s always useful to go to Mysore classes in parallel with the course.
You need to be at least 16 years old to attend (under 18 need parental approval).
The course is run in cooperation with Medborgarskolan and all registrations and payments are done through their website (click the link)

During the summer of 2020 we give you the opportunity to start an inward journey instead of travelling abroad. On three occasions this summer we’ll have introduction classes to Ashtanga Yoga for beginners (15/6, 13/7 and 17/8)
The class gives you an introduction to the basics of Ashtanga yoga and is suitable for those who have never tried yoga before, but also to those who have already practiced other types of yoga and who want to learn the special method of Ashtanga. The focus of the class is on becoming acquainted with one’s own breathing, learning to synchronize breath and movement (so-called vinyasa krama) as well as the practice of Sun Salutation A + B and some closing postures from the Ashtanga Yoga sequence. You will also get a brief insight into the background and philosophy of yoga, its health benefits for both body and mind as well as practical advice on how to get started with a regular practice.
All participants are offered to take part in two weeks of Mysore classes immediately after the introduction – WITHOUT EXTRA COST. Mysore class is the way Ashtanga yoga traditionally is practiced. Read more about the Mysore classes under class descriptions
The teacher is Isabella Nitschke, Authorized Level II by Sharath Jois in Mysore, India
The class is given in partnership with Medborgarskolan. Pre-registration is required and done through Medborgarskolans website (click the link). We have an age limit of 16 years and participants under 18 need the approval of their guardian.

Among other things, we organise [on trial] a couple of courses at Limhamn together with Gunilla Sandberg (Yoga ashtanga Malmö) – a foundation/beginner’s and a course in Yoga for men. As usual we have our usual beginner’s 1 and 2 courses at Värnhem, and we run taster classes (4 sessions) ahead of an in-depth course that starts in 2021. Our alternative after-work class Friday-fun also returns once a month starting in September. You can find all courses and events by clicking here.
You can see the autumn schedule below and on our schedule page where all information about the teaching can be found. Remember to follow our rules under Covid-19. You can find them here.
Beginner’s/Foundation courses cover the basics of Ashtanga yoga and are suitable for complete beginners as well as those who practice other types of yoga but would like to learn Ashtanga thoroughly from scratch.
The course begins with a short introduction to yoga philosophy followed by a gradual learning of the Sun Salutations, the standing asanas (postures) and part of the Ashtanga yoga primary series as well as finishing postures. Focus is particularly put on linking breath and movement in the so called vinyasa krama system. We also cover Bandhas (energy locks in the body) and Drishti (focus). You will also learn how to practice and move safely to avoid injury and to build both strength and flexibility.
The course runs for 6 weeks and starts on Monday 11 November 2019 at 17.15. All participants are encouraged to attend Mysore classes in parallel to the course. One FREE Mysore class per week is included in the course price. Read more about Mysore classes under class descriptions.
