DETAILED PROGRAM

FRIDAY 20 AUGUST

17-19 Integrating Breath and Bandhas in Your Asana Practice

In this first session with Tim you will locate your internal locks and drop into your breath to free your practice.  Pattabhi Jois used to say, “the Ashtanga practice is a breathing practice – the rest is just bending!”. You will establish yourself firmly in the foundations of breath with a clear physical understanding of the use of the inner body bandhas. You will learn simple breathing to help your body find deep support and true strength, for your mind to settle into one-pointed focus and to free your body. Experience how this ancient tradition holds many life lessons. All levels welcome.

19-1930 Q&A

We end the evening with a short Question& Answer with Tim. Bring your questions!

 SATURDAY 21 AUGUST

08.00– 10.30 Mysore Style class

Named after the city where Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois developed their yoga method, this is the classic way Ashtanga Yoga is taught. A melting pot of yoga practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced, this class sets out to offer personalised guidance to every practitioner exactly where you need it most. Build a relationship with yourself, your practice and your teacher in this inspiring energy.

13-15.30 Gateway Postures of The Primary Series

(Bhujapidasana, Kurmasana, Supta Kurmasana)

The Primary Series, Yoga Chikitsa, is meant to heal and strengthen our body and mind, preparing us for a deeper and more subtle asana exploration in the Intermediate Series, Nadi Shodana. But sometimes we get stuck! The leg just won’t go where we want it to go or our knees, wrists or shoulders seems more achy than happy when attempting the higher notes of this series, also called the ‘Gateway Postures’ as they serve as indicators that our body has grown ready for a next level. But what to do when we can’t find our body molding those fancy shapes?  This workshop addresses that issue by focusing on technique, proper alignment and anatomical insights that will help you understand how your body moves and how to progress to the next level of your aptitude. We set up for a detailed experience of these difficult gateway postures, slowly peeling the layers that obstruct our view and motion required to find the freedom and power of  this yoga method. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

SUNDAY 22 AUGUST

08.00– 10.30 Mysore Style class

Named after the city where Krishnamacharya and Pattabhi Jois developed their yoga method, this is is the classic way Ashtanga Yoga is taught. A melting pot of yoga practitioners of all levels from beginner to advanced, this class sets out to offer personalized guidance to every practitioner at exactly where you need it most. Build relationship with yourself, your practice and your teacher in this inspiring energy.

13.00 – 15.30 Inversions, Headstands & Arm Balances

In this workshop you will learn practical tools to turn upside down with stability, tranquillity and grace. You will gain a thorough understanding of the anatomical patterns at play in your body while inverted. Detailing the shoulder mechanics helps you integrate your arms, spine, rib-cage and hip to create a solid platform for accessible and pleasurable inversions whether on your head, hands or elbows. We will play with simple to advanced asanas. All levels of practitioners are welcome.

CHARITY CLASS: 108 sun salutations in support of V-Care

The practice of yoga involves more than just making shapes on the yoga mat. Seva – selfless service – is also an important aspect to practice. We would therefore like to finish the year in the spirit of of giving and on the last full moon of the year do 108 sun salutations in support of the organization V-Care. We will do the class at the shala for those who wish to take part in person and also broadcast live via Zoom for remote access.

Since a number of years Ashtanga Yoga Malmö together with Yogashala Stockholm, has chosen to support the small charity V-Care, based in Mysore, India. The organization helps give children from the disadvantaged groups in society education and a better future. You can read more about V-Care and about doing Seva on our Karma yoga page.

To do 108 sun salutations has a special meaning and is often performed as a ceremony or offering. It takes about 50 minutes to complete and it is optional to do all 108 or only a few. You can decide to partner up with someone and do haf-half as a team, bring your family and divide the salutations between you or attempt to do them all on your own. The important thing is to participate.

You may donate any chosen amount either in cash onsite or through swish 123 576 46 91. After the class we have tea and “fika” together.

The class is free of charge (except for your chosen donation) but please sign up in advance through Medborgarskolan . If you cannot participate but would still like to donate please contact us.

After Christmas special workshop: Breath & Bandha

This workshop focuses on the importance of the breath in our yoga practice as well as for our everyday  life and health. You will also be introduced to the basics of the root and abdominal locks – Mula and Uddiyana bandha – how these are linked to the breath and to asana, as well as their function within Ashtanga yoga.

Ashtanga yoga is known for its dynamics and the flow of asanas combined with a sounding breath. The special technique used to synchronize breathing and movement is called vinyasa krama and is unique to Ashtanga yoga. The purpose of yoga is to calm the mind – Yoga citta vritti nirodhah. How we breathe affects how we think and how we feel. If we breathe inadequately or strained, we can neither focus (dhyana) nor be stable. Inadequate breathing is also often contributing to or signal of stress / ill health.

The class will give you a deeper understanding of your yoga practice by improving your relationship to your breath. You will also get a better idea of how good breathing and application of Bandha can create lightness in your practice. We explore different breathing techniques and the application of bandha both in movement and stillness.  The class ends with a guided relaxation.

The class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners except to complete beginners (beginners are referred to our foundation courses). It is recommended not to have eaten before class in order to be able to activate the abdomen and ribcage without feeling full.

The number of places is limited; pre-registration is required and is done via our partner Medborgarskolan ( click the link). The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, Authorised Ashtanga Yoga Teacher (Level II) by Sharath Jois, Mysore, India. Read more about Isabella on our teacher’s page

POSTPONED – PARTY: ANNUAL POTLUCK / BRUNCH

We are sad to inform that this (to us very special) event has been postponed due to the Covid19 pandemic. We are hoping that we can announce a new date as soon as the conditions allow or at latest in spring time when the weather is warmer and we can meet outdoors for a pick nick.

After the guided Ashtanga yoga Primary series class on Sunday the 6th  December, all of Ashtanga Yoga Malmö’s yogis (including family / friends) are invited to our annual potluck party / vegetarian (vegan) brunch. If you cant’ make it to class you are of course welcome to only participate in the brunch afterwards.

This is a great chance for everyone to socialize and get to know each other off the yoga mat. It is also an opportunity for us at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to thank all our practitioners for the past year and wish everyone good fortune and health for the coming year.

This event is usually much appreciated, but due to Covid-19, this year we have to be a little extra careful and ask everyone to pre-register so that we know how many of you will come. Email us (click here) in advance if you are coming (and how many people). Please also bring a vegan (or vegetarian) contribution to the brunch. Coffee, tea and plant based milk will be available.

WELCOME!

YIN YOGA & MEDITATION COURSE

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you get time to explore the sensations in your own body. It can be a good complement to other physical activities such as running or other more dynamic yoga styles. Yin yoga is great for those who feel particularly stiff, or if you aspire to learn how to listen to your own body.

The course runs on Tuesdays at 17:15 – 18:30, starting on 10 November for a total of 6 weeks. Registration and payment is done via our partner Medborgarskolan Syd (click on the link). Current members/card holders may attend the course using their membership (or klippkort) but you still need to pre-register with Medborgarskolan. All classes will also be broadcast online via Zoom, so that you can take part from home should you be anxious about Covid19 or if you feel unwell.

In yin yoga you stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with, 5-10 minutes when you have more experience), turn your attention inward and scan your own body for any tension, while trying to relax by using your breath. In doing this you stimulate and stretch the connective tissues which keep all muscles and organs together, while at the same time you learn to cultivate tranquility and awareness.  The important thing is not how the postures look, but rather how you feel inside.

At the end of each class, we do a semi-guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes. All are welcome regardless of previous yoga experience! The course is taught by Miho Hellén-Halme, certified yin yoga teacher.

“FRIDAY-FUN”: Strength & Flexibility – arm balances and inversions

One Friday every month, Ashtanga Yoga Malmö organises a special after-work class called Friday-fun. Here we explore asanas in a playful and fun way and practice in a different way than in the Mysore room. Each class has a special theme; the first session this autumn explores strength and balance in our yoga practice. Quite literally, we look at balancing postures of varied difficulty (standing balances, arm balances, inversions, etc.). Participants are guided through a specific sequence of postures where they get to explore the interplay between strength and flexibility as well as the necessity of breath, dristhi (focus) and bandha (body lock).

The class contains both easier and more advanced asanas and is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but is not suitable for complete beginners. The number of places is limited; pre-registration is required and is done via our partner Medborgarskolan (click the link).

The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, Authorised Ashtanga Yoga Teacher (Level II) by Sharath Jois, Mysore, India. Read more about Isabella on our teacher’s page www.ashtangayogamalmo.se/en/larare
