After Christmas Yoga weekend with guest teacher Matt Ryan

Ashtanga Yoga Malmö is very honoured and happy to welcome Matt Ryan to our shala for a weekend workshop on December 26-27th 2020. Matt will teach a weekend workshop with Mysore style class in the morning followed by an afternoon workshop including both meditation and asana practice. See full programme below.

About Matt

Matt Ryan, originally from Manchester, has been practicing and teaching Ashtanga Yoga for over 20 years. In addition to having his own shala in Manchester for many years he has taught yoga around the world, most lately in the Venice Beach area of Los Angeles, California. A few months ago he returned to the UK where he is now settling in Margate. Matt is married to Lina from Lund, and thus has links to Sweden which he frequently visits to see family

10 years ago Matt started studying Zen Buddhism which foundations lie in the daily sitting practice of Zazen. When he added Zazen to his Ashtanga practice he noticed an immediate effect resulting in a steadier more focused mind whilst moving through the asana sequences – the end result being a sense of in the moment presence coupled with a strong flexible mind & body. In addition to his experiences from the Ashtanga Yoga practice he will give an introduction to Zazen during his workshop in Malmö.

Detailed weekend programme

SATURDAY 26 DEC

8:30 – 11:30 am, Mysore class

1:30-4pm Afternoon workshop

  • 1:30-2 pm Introduction to Zen Meditation
  • 2-4 pm10 % further for Mind and Body”

Using the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series as a base, Matt will be talking through each posture with tips and advice on how by making simple mind and body adjustments students can find deeper levels of flexibility and concentration. Also by employing the methods taught in this session students can learn how to more mindful of their practice and this in turn will help to prevent injury through learning how not to force or over stretch the body in postures. This is a perfect workshop for both new comers and seasoned pros to Ashtanga.

SUNDAY 27 DEC

8:30 – 11:30 am, Mysore class

1:30-4pm Afternoon workshop

  • 1:30-2 pm Introduction to Zen Meditation
  • 2-3:30pm “Backbends without fear”

Back bending postures can really divide opinion- usually depending on the flexibility of your back. Dipping into his 20+ years back bending tool box Matt will be teaching techniques on how students can work backwards from the front to the back of the body to build confidence and to gain greater control in their backbends.
