NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020

This newsletter hopefully reaches you ahead of Valentine’s Day and we at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö would like to send you some special thought on this particular day. Your trust and dedication means a lot to us as we do our best to create a safe and pleasant environment in the shala where you can always be yourself no matter what.

We would also like to send a reminder that on Friday 14 February there’s a guided Primary Series class at 6.30am. Since the start of the year we have introduced more guided classes and we have extended our morning opening hours with so-called self-practice (unassisted) from 8.45-10.30am. That way, you still have a chance to practice even if you work late hours or don’t hear your alarm on time. Read more about the extended class schedule and opening hours here.

Please also note that in February during w 8, the winter holiday, all our evening classes are cancelled. In February and March, several full/new moons fall on Sundays and we don’t teach then. Don’t forget to double check in order to avoid arriving at the shala unnecessarily. This and other temporary schedule changes are always found on our news page which it is worth visiting regularly.

NEW COURSES – On 2nd March we start our next foundation course in Ashtanga yoga. The course is suitable for people with no prior experience of yoga as well as people who have tried other types of yoga but want to learn the basics of the Ashtanga system thoroughly. More info about the course and how to register can be found here.

Early March, we also launch a new course in Yin Yoga & Meditation taught by Miho. The course runs on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone regardless of experience. Our existing members can attend the course through their monthly/season cards. “Klippkort” may also be used as payment BUT everyone must register beforehand via our partner Medborgarskolan. Read more about the course and how to register here

GUEST TEACHERS – This spring we have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge of other aspects of yoga besides the physical practice, as we on two occasions have the honour of welcoming renowned experts in yoga philosophy and chanting. On 7-8 March, Måns Broo, associate professor of religious science at Turku Academy, visits Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to teach a weekend course on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Måns is the first to translate the above-mentioned text directly from Sanskrit to Swedish and to study with him is a unique opportunity. During the weekend with Måns, all other classes are cancelled but self-practice will be offered early in the morning before the course. Read more and register here (the course is held in Swedish)

On 8-9 April, we welcome Laksmish Bhat, teacher of Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and mantra chanting at the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore. Laskmish will give an introduction to the yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika and teach mantra chanting. We also get the opportunity to participate in a traditional Ganesha puja (ceremony). Read more and sign up here. Laksmish’s visit is part of a teaching tour he does in Europe and his visit to Malmö is arranged in collaboration with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen where he will teach before coming to us. If you’d like to participate in Copenhagen too, you find more info via this link.

FRIDAY-FUN – our monthly alternative after-work class returns on 28 February when Miho teaches a class of yin yoga & meditation (read more here). In March, Friday-fun maintains the slower pace with the theme “recovery and mindfulness” – a class taught by Isabella on 20 March. You find all our extra workshops, events with guest teachers and retreats on our event page.

There you’ll also find this year’s YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK, a worldwide charity class for the benefit of the organisation Odanadi. Odanadi works against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children in Mysore and the state of Karnataka, India. This year is the 10th anniversary of YST and our event takes place on 24 March (which is a new moon day and all other classes are cancelled). Ashtanga Yoga Malmö has been involved in YST since the start in 2010 and has participated every year with the exception of one. Read more about the class and the cause here

TIM FELDMANN – lastly, we would like to inform you that the guest workshop with Tim Feldmann, which was scheduled for 21-23 August unfortunately has been postponed until next year. Many of you have asked what happened and it is due to unexpected commitments in Miami that Tim has asked to postpone his visit until August 2021, more specifically to weekend of the 20-22nd. (Tim and Kino have bought a large new ware house to be renovated into a yoga centre opening later tin 2020). The workshop will be posted on the website again, but we won’t take registrations before the second half of 2020.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone manages to avoid any seasonal flu so that we get to see you in class. Please remember that if you do get bedridden for more than two weeks we can pause the card (a note from your doctor is needed though). And don’t forget that you can use your “friskvårdsbidrag” with us. In case you need a special receipt for that please contact our partner Medborgarskolan (Joachim Maathz).

Our regular classes resume on 7 January with some new additions and minor changes to the schedule. Between 7-9 January we’ll get a new floor installed in the shala and the morning Mysore classes will therefore be held in the dance studio. Due to the renovations our evening classes on 7+9th January are cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

NEW YEARS YOGA – on New Year’s Eve Isabella teaches the last class of the year, a guided Primary series at 9-10.30am. The shala re-opens  on 2nd January with Morning Mysore at 06am (Miho). Read more and sign up here

GUEST TEACHER – Jens Bache from Astanga Yoga Copenhagen returns to Malmö to teach a guided Primary series class on 5 January. After class, he’ll give a talk on his research on an important Ashtanga Yoga text that he discovered in the library of Mysore.  Last year Jens’ class was full so don’t miss the chance to practice with him this time and to listen to his interesting presentation. More about Jens, the class and the lecture here.

THE SPRING SCHEDULE starts on 7 January with some small changes including a few more guided classes. The Mysore class on Tuesday evenings will be replaced by a guided HALF Primary series starting at 17.15. AND on 24/1 Miho teaches a class in yin yoga & meditation (read more here). As from February we resume Friday-fun on a monthly basis.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS – lastly we need to inform you that as from 2020 we have to raise the price for our different practice cards. Our prices have been the same since the start in 2013 but now we unfortunately have to make some adjustments due to increased expenses for the shala. We ask for your understanding and cooperation. We of course remain flexible with regards to splitting your invoices into several installments and will continue to give discounts to students, pensioners and those on sick leave. A list of all new prices is available here

That’s all for now. Thank you all for the past year, for your trust, hard work and dedication. NEWSLETTER Nov/Dec 2019

Warm greetings from a sunny Goa where I spend a few extra days after the Purple Valley retreat. It’s kind of a holiday combined with further education as I take the opportunity to attend some workshops with experienced teachers on site. All in order to improve my teaching skills and to get some new energy. I hope you had a great time with Sara and Hanna while they’ve covered classes and I look forward to seeing you all again soon. In this newsletter you find information about upcoming events in December and January as well as the Christmas and New Year’s schedule.

The retreat at Purple Valley was very successful but it would have been even lovlier if more of you had joined. Then the chance of returning there at some point in the future would have increased. When I arrived in Goa I was welcomed by the worst cyclone since many years and the rain was pouring down incessably for four whole days. But just as the guests arrived for the retreat, the clouds scattered. Then we had days filled with sun, yoga and really amazing food. I’ll tell you more on Sunday November 24 when I’m back in Malmö and teach the guided Primary series class followed by tea and talk.

CHARITY CLASS – December marks the month of generosity and of giving back and as we’ve done in previous years we organize a charity class to raise funds for the organization V-Care in Mysore. At the full moon on Thursday 12/12 at 5.30 pm, we do 108 sun salutations together (or how many salutations you can/want to do). The class is free of charge but instead you make a donation that goes directly to V-Care. Read more here and please register in advance.

POTLUCK/CHRISTMAS BRUNCH – our annual, very popular vegan potluck party returns on Sunday 15/12 after guided Primary series class. The brunch is held at the shala from 11-13.00. Bring a festive mood and a vegan/vegetarian contribution to the table and a friend or your family. Please let us know in advance how many of you are coming. You can find more info about the event on this page.

THE AUTUMN SCHEDULE continues until 23/12 and thereafter we’ll have special opening hours between Christmas Eve 24/12 and 6/1. You find the entire Christmas and New Year schedule here

NEW YEAR mini RETREAT– Isabella teaches a mini-retreat with the theme “A fresh start” at Yoga by the Sea in Mölle on January 2-5. All levels of practitioners are welcome. Accommodation and board are not included in the price but can be arranged separately. The last day for registration is mid-December – read more here

GUEST TEACHER – Jens Bache from Astanga Yoga Copenhagen returns to Malmö to teach a guided Primary series class on 5/1. After class, he gives a lecture on his research on an important text about the Ashtanga Yoga found in Mysore, India. Read more about Jens, the class and the lecture here.

THE SPRING’S SCHEDULE starts on 7/1-2020. It will be published online in due time and sent to you with the next newsletter just before the end of the year. Information about new beginners courses is already available online on our Beginners page and our first beginners course starts on 13 January (more info here) If you know someone who wants to fulfill their New Year’s resolution to start a yoga practice then feel free to share the information with them!

That’s all for now. Remember that we are on social media Instagram or Facebook where you can find pictures from Purple Valley and Goa and stay updated on what is happening in the shala between newsletters. On Facebook we also have a closed group Ashtanga Yoga Malmö (and Lund) practitioner’s group for everyone who practices with us regularly where you can ask questions, organize social events and other fun stuff.

On 7/10 we talk about “A Sustainable Yoga Practice” and on 4/11, Isabella shares stories from her trip to the Himalayas.
Those who do not feel ready for full guided primary series are welcome to the Beginner’s level 2 class (guided up to half primary series) that takes place every Sunday at 11:30 in Malmö.

NEW BEGINNERS COURSES – start in Malmö in November shortly after the autumn holidays. Isabella teaches the course on Monday evenings starting 5/11 and Sara teaches the Saturday morning course starting 10/11. All upcoming courses are available here

FRIDAY-FUN – our alternative after-work class returns on 9/11 at 17:00 in Malmö with the theme “Back to Basics: Jump back, jump through”. It will be a challenging class but as always we’ll have great fun! Sign up now to secure your spot!

WORKSHOPS in other cities – in November, Isabella is invited to teach special weekend workshops at USYoga in Borås and Mpiyo in Helsingborg. Why not join or share with friends in the area who might be interested?

Our next newsletter will be published at the end of November. It’ll contain more info about social events at the shala in December/January as well as the schedule for Christmas and New Year. NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2018

Even though it’s still summer (and what a summer !!!), our autumn schedule is already up and running. There’s Mysore class 6 mornings and 2 evenings a week (except on full/new moon when we’re closed. See all moon-day dates here). Beginners’ courses in Malmö and Lund start in a few weeks and an overview of the autumn schedule can be found on our schedule page. Continue reading for info on our courses, upcoming retreats, Friday-fun and more this autumn.

YOGA RETREAT – the last weekend in August, 24-26/8, we go to Uddebo for two days of re-charging our batteries ahead of the autumn. We only have a couple of residential spots left but you can still join if you arrange your own accommodation nearby. The Uddebo-retreat is an annual trip which is usually highly appreciated. Read more here and book now!

BEGINNER’S LEVEL 1&2 COURSES – start in Malmö and Lund at the end of August/beginning of September. New is that we have TWO beginner’s courses in Malmö; on Mondays taught by Isabella and on Saturdays taught by Miho and later this autumn Sara. In Lund, the beginner’s course is on Wednesdays at Hälsans Hus. The beginner’s level 2 course that was held in Lund on Wednesdays last semester is moved to Sundays in Malmö. The course/class is open to those who oversleep on the Sunday or those who want/need more guidance up to half primary series. You can join the level 2 as a course or drop-in with “klippkort”/monthly card, but it’s good to sign up in advance regardless. More about upcoming courses, times, prices, etc. on our events page.

MONTHLY PRIMARY SERIES – on the first Sunday each month Isabella guides a full primary series class in Malmö followed by tea & talk where we discuss a yoga-related subject. Recently, we talked about the teacher/student relationship in yoga. Next month (2/9), the theme is “Ahimsa”, non-violence, the most important yogic principle. Click here for all dates of guided class with  tea&talk.

FRIDAY-FUN – our alternative after-work resumes once a month at our studio in Malmö. This autumn we go back to basics and explore important parts of Ashtanga that are sometimes forgotten or “cheated” with. All Friday-fun classes and themes are available on the events page. The first class is on Friday 31/8 with the theme “Breath and Bandha” – read more and sign up here (places fill up fast).

WORKSHOPS in other cities – this autumn, Isabella also teaches in other yoga shalas in Sweden. In November, she travels to USYoga in Borås and later to Mpiyo in Helsingborg for special workshops. Come and join or feel free to share with friends who live nearby and may be interested.

We look forward to welcoming back old faces after the holidays and to receive new yoga aspirants at the shala. But, please make sure you’ve read and follow our guidelines for everyone’s comfort. And stay up to date about temporary schedule changes etc. by following us on Instagram and Facebook, or here on the news page/blog regularly.

See you on the yoga mat!
Om Shanti
