YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK – charity class

Yoga Stop Traffick (YST) is a global yoga event organized to raise awareness of human trafficking and to raise money for the anti-trafficking organization Odanadi Seva Trust, based in Mysore, India.

Every year in March, participants at yoga schools around the world perform 108 sun salutations in support of Odanadi. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the global YST event that takes place on March 15th. We at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö will participate as always, but are organising our contribution to YST on Tuesday 24/3. Instead of 108 sun salutations, we gather for a quiet, introspective evening class with a combination of seated and walking meditation that fits well with the new moon that day!

By participating, you are helping to spread knowledge about the serious and growing exploitation of women and children that is going on not only in India but all over the world. Your participation will help raise funds to support the important work of the Odanadi Seva Trust in the prevention, rescue and rehabilitation of trafficked women and children in the state of Karnataka, India.

The class starts with approximately 10 minutes of seated meditation followed by some walking meditation and easy yoga postures. We finish with another round of seated meditation. The class is taught by Miho Hellén-Halme and will take about 45-50 minutes.

The class is free of charge, but participants are encouraged to contribute financially with an optional amount (cash only). All donations go directly and in full to Odanadi. It is also possible to contribute separately in case you cannot / do not want to come to class. To participate sign up through our partner Medborgarskolan Syd

YOGA SUTRA with Måns Broo – two day course

This course is taught in Swedish – please switch language at the top of the page to read the Swedish description and programme.

Yin yoga & Meditation – 8 week course with Miho

In March 2020 we launch this 8 week course in yin yoga and meditation with Miho Hellén-Halme. Yin yoga ca be a good complement to other physical activities such as running and other more dynamic yoga styles and is great if you feel particularly stiff.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you take time to explore the sensations in your own body. You stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with, 5-10 minutes when you have more experience), turn your attention inward and scan your own body to see if there is any tension, while trying to relax using your breath. Thus you can stimulate and stretch the connective tissues which keep all the muscles and organs together in the whole body, while at the same time you can cultivate tranquility and awareness.  The important thing is not what the postures look like, but rather how you let your body be and to stay focused on inner sensations. Each class is ended with a 10 – 15 minute guided meditation. All levels are welcome regardless of previous experience.

The course runs on Wednesdays at 19-20:00  starting on 4 March for a total of 8 weeks with a break during the Easter holidays on 8/4. Registration and payment are done via our partner Medborgarskolan Syd (click on the link)

The course is taught by qualified yin yoga teacher Miho Hellén-Halme.

FRIDAY-FUN: Yin Yoga & Meditation with Miho

Our alternative after work class Friday-fun adapts a slower pace in 2020. In the end of January (24/1) and February (28/2) Miho teaches two sessions with the theme of yin yoga and meditation. The classes are an intro to a course in Yin Yoga starting on Wednesday evenings in March 2020.

ASHTANGA YOGA SUMMER RETREAT with Isabella at KADERMO CONSCIOUS LIVING

From 7-12 July 2019 Isabella will teach a week of Ashtanga Yoga hosted by Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland.  The summer of 2018 was the first time Isabella was invited to teach at Kadermo and in 2019 she is delighted to return for a second year.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

Kadermo Island is situated a couple of hours from Helsinki and is easy to get to by train directly from the airport. The retreat centre offers a unique opportunity to experience yoga in a peaceful, untouched and idyllic setting. There are no shops or cars and hardly any people on the island. The retreat is set in a protected oak forest area where some of the trees are 500 years old.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga retreat is the home of senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Stefan Engström. He was born on the island and founded the retreat centre in 1994. Since then people from all over the world have been coming together to practice yoga and conscious self-development with Stefan and guest teachers.

Weekly program

The week includes two daily yoga classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All yoga classes during the week are taught by Isabella Nitschke, KPJAYI authorised (level2) ashtanga yoga teacher. There are two yoga halls available with plenty of room for both asana and quiet practices.

Upon arrival on the Sunday evening we’ll gather for a welcome and introduction session followed by dinner.

Monday to Friday there will be Morning Mysore style class for more the more seasoned practitioners and depending on the level of participants there may be the opportunity for more guided teaching. Before morning asana class we practice silence and students may may do their own meditation and breathing practices in the meditation hall.

Afternoon class is held Mon – Thurs at 16.30-18.30. This class gives an opportunity for Isabella to help you deepen your understanding of the practice by looking at asana technique, yoga philosophy and chanting. Each class will have a different theme depending on the participants’ needs but will also include some easy pranayama and relaxation techniques. A light dinner is served at 19.00.

The Facilities

Students are accommodated in various places on the island, there is a two-storey summer house on a stunning rocky area overlooking the sea which is 10 mins walk from the yoga shala, there are also rooms the winter house which is closer to the yoga shala. These are built in an old fashioned traditional villa style that was common in the twenties.  All toilets are composting and showers are eco-friendly.

We enjoy vegetarian lunch and dinner cooked by the globally adored resident chef Anu from Anu’s Cafe in Mysore. Herbal teas are available all day. The café is also open straight after morning practice for coffee and smoothies (not included in the price). After lunch you have free time to explore the surroundings, walk, swim, go canoeing, read a great variety of yoga books from the library or enjoy the Finnish sauna.

Booking

All reservations and payments are done through Stefan at Kadermo Conscious Living by email Stefan@Kadermo.fi . The number of participants is limited in order to give everyone a personal and special experience of their time on the island. The retreat centre retreats all summer long and there are discount options for those wanting to stay more than one week. For more information and details about the summer programme please visit the Kadermo Conscious Living website. For questions about the yoga classes or your practice please email Isabella.
