ASHTANGA YOGA SUMMER RETREAT with Isabella at KADERMO CONSCIOUS LIVING

After two previous very successful summer retreats in 2018 and 19, Isabella returns for the third successive year to Kadermo Conscious Living in Finland. At the invitation of Kadermo’s founder and owner Stefan Engström, Isabella will teach a weeklong Ashtanga Yoga retreat 3-10 July 2020. You may come for 2,5 or 7 days (arrival Friday pm or Sunday pm).

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga Retreat

Kadermo Island is situated a couple of hours from Helsinki and is easy to get to by train directly from the airport. The retreat centre offers a unique opportunity to experience yoga in a peaceful, untouched and idyllic setting. There are no shops or cars and hardly any people on the island. The retreat is set in a protected oak forest area where some of the trees are 500 years old.

Kadermo Ashtanga Yoga retreat is the home of senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Stefan Engström. He was born on the island and founded the retreat centre in 1994. Since then people from all over the world have been coming together to practice yoga and conscious self-development with Stefan and guest teachers.

Weekly programme
The week includes two daily yoga classes, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. All yoga classes during the week are taught by Isabella Nitschke,  authorised (level2) ashtanga yoga teacher. There are two yoga halls available with plenty of room for both asana and quiet practices.

Upon arrival on the Sunday evening we’ll gather for a welcome and introduction session followed by dinner.

In the mornings there will be Mysore style class for more the more seasoned practitioners and depending on the level of participants there may be the opportunity for more guided teaching. Before morning asana class we practice silence and students may may do their own meditation and breathing practices in the meditation hall.

Afternoon class are held16.00-18.30. This class gives an opportunity for Isabella to help you deepen your understanding of the practice by looking at asana technique, yoga philosophy and chanting. Each class will have a different theme depending on the participants’ needs but will also include some easy pranayama and relaxation techniques. A light dinner is served at 19.00.

The Facilities

Students are accommodated in various places on the island, there is a two-storey summer house on a stunning rocky area overlooking the sea which is 10 mins walk from the yoga shala, there are also rooms the winter house which is closer to the yoga shala. These are built in an old fashioned traditional villa style that was common in the twenties.  All toilets are composting and showers are eco-friendly.

We enjoy vegetarian lunch and dinner cooked by the globally adored resident chef Anu from Anu’s Cafe in Mysore. Herbal teas are available all day. The café is also open straight after morning practice for coffee and smoothies (not included in the price). After lunch you have free time to explore the surroundings, walk, swim, go canoeing, read a great variety of yoga books from the library or enjoy the Finnish sauna.

Booking

All reservations and payments are done through Stefan at Kadermo Conscious Living by email Stefan@Kadermo.fi . The number of participants is limited in order to give everyone a personal and special experience of their time on the island. The retreat centre retreats all summer long and there are discount options for those wanting to stay more than one week. For more information and details about the summer programme please visit the Kadermo Conscious Living website. For questions about the yoga classes or your practice please email Isabella.

We look forward to welcoming you this summer!

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020

This newsletter hopefully reaches you ahead of Valentine’s Day and we at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö would like to send you some special thought on this particular day. Your trust and dedication means a lot to us as we do our best to create a safe and pleasant environment in the shala where you can always be yourself no matter what.

We would also like to send a reminder that on Friday 14 February there’s a guided Primary Series class at 6.30am. Since the start of the year we have introduced more guided classes and we have extended our morning opening hours with so-called self-practice (unassisted) from 8.45-10.30am. That way, you still have a chance to practice even if you work late hours or don’t hear your alarm on time. Read more about the extended class schedule and opening hours here.

Please also note that in February during w 8, the winter holiday, all our evening classes are cancelled. In February and March, several full/new moons fall on Sundays and we don’t teach then. Don’t forget to double check in order to avoid arriving at the shala unnecessarily. This and other temporary schedule changes are always found on our news page which it is worth visiting regularly.

NEW COURSES – On 2nd March we start our next foundation course in Ashtanga yoga. The course is suitable for people with no prior experience of yoga as well as people who have tried other types of yoga but want to learn the basics of the Ashtanga system thoroughly. More info about the course and how to register can be found here.

Early March, we also launch a new course in Yin Yoga & Meditation taught by Miho. The course runs on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone regardless of experience. Our existing members can attend the course through their monthly/season cards. “Klippkort” may also be used as payment BUT everyone must register beforehand via our partner Medborgarskolan. Read more about the course and how to register here

GUEST TEACHERS – This spring we have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge of other aspects of yoga besides the physical practice, as we on two occasions have the honour of welcoming renowned experts in yoga philosophy and chanting. On 7-8 March, Måns Broo, associate professor of religious science at Turku Academy, visits Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to teach a weekend course on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Måns is the first to translate the above-mentioned text directly from Sanskrit to Swedish and to study with him is a unique opportunity. During the weekend with Måns, all other classes are cancelled but self-practice will be offered early in the morning before the course. Read more and register here (the course is held in Swedish)

On 8-9 April, we welcome Laksmish Bhat, teacher of Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and mantra chanting at the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore. Laskmish will give an introduction to the yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika and teach mantra chanting. We also get the opportunity to participate in a traditional Ganesha puja (ceremony). Read more and sign up here. Laksmish’s visit is part of a teaching tour he does in Europe and his visit to Malmö is arranged in collaboration with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen where he will teach before coming to us. If you’d like to participate in Copenhagen too, you find more info via this link.

FRIDAY-FUN – our monthly alternative after-work class returns on 28 February when Miho teaches a class of yin yoga & meditation (read more here). In March, Friday-fun maintains the slower pace with the theme “recovery and mindfulness” – a class taught by Isabella on 20 March. You find all our extra workshops, events with guest teachers and retreats on our event page.

There you’ll also find this year’s YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK, a worldwide charity class for the benefit of the organisation Odanadi. Odanadi works against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children in Mysore and the state of Karnataka, India. This year is the 10th anniversary of YST and our event takes place on 24 March (which is a new moon day and all other classes are cancelled). Ashtanga Yoga Malmö has been involved in YST since the start in 2010 and has participated every year with the exception of one. Read more about the class and the cause here

TIM FELDMANN – lastly, we would like to inform you that the guest workshop with Tim Feldmann, which was scheduled for 21-23 August unfortunately has been postponed until next year. Many of you have asked what happened and it is due to unexpected commitments in Miami that Tim has asked to postpone his visit until August 2021, more specifically to weekend of the 20-22nd. (Tim and Kino have bought a large new ware house to be renovated into a yoga centre opening later tin 2020). The workshop will be posted on the website again, but we won’t take registrations before the second half of 2020.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone manages to avoid any seasonal flu so that we get to see you in class. Please remember that if you do get bedridden for more than two weeks we can pause the card (a note from your doctor is needed though). And don’t forget that you can use your “friskvårdsbidrag” with us. In case you need a special receipt for that please contact our partner Medborgarskolan (Joachim Maathz).

NEWSLETTER Nov/Dec 2019

Warm greetings from a sunny Goa where I spend a few extra days after the Purple Valley retreat. It’s kind of a holiday combined with further education as I take the opportunity to attend some workshops with experienced teachers on site. The retreat at Purple Valley was very successful but it would have been even lovlier if more of you had joined. Then the chance of returning there at some point in the future would have increased. When I arrived in Goa I was welcomed by the worst cyclone since many years and the rain was pouring down incessably for four whole days. But just as the guests arrived for the retreat, the clouds scattered. Then we had days filled with sun, yoga and really amazing food. I’ll tell you more on Sunday November 24 when I’m back in Malmö and teach the guided Primary series class followed by tea and talk.

At the full moon on Thursday 12/12 at 5.30 pm, we do 108 sun salutations together (or how many salutations you can/want to do). The class is free of charge but instead you make a donation that goes directly to V-Care. Read more here and please register in advance.

POTLUCK/CHRISTMAS BRUNCH – our annual, very popular vegan potluck party returns on Sunday 15/12 after guided Primary series class. The brunch is held at the shala from 11-13.00. Friday-fun: transitions, jumps and arm balance technique

Friday-fun is our alternative monthly after-work special class. We gather to explore asana, play and have fun in a different format than Ashtanga yoga Mysore style. Each month the class has a different theme and this class focuses mainly on the jumps used in the transitions between asanas in the Ashtanga yoga series.

Regular practice of the Ashtanga Primary and Intermediate series helps us to become stronger and more flexible over time, but this takes time and requires a lot of patience. Learning a good technique from the start facilitates your practice and prevents injury.

During this class you will have the opportunity to play with and explore different movements and jumps. We look at a number of techniques to find strength and control while we learn to remain soft. You will learn the basics of the different transitions done between asans in Ashtanga yoga and get special advice for arm balances and handstands. We alternate working in pairs and using the wall.

The class is open to all levels but is not suitable for complete beginners. Participants are asked to come with an open and playful mind!

The class is taught by Hanna Mjöberg, authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher (II) by Sharath Jois in Mysore.

Places are limited so please pre-register through our partner Medborgarskolan

Ashtanga yoga workshop & Yoga of Presence and Wholeness with Stefan Engström

Yoga of Presence and Wholeness – A unique approach to Bio-Mechanics

The first weekend of April 2019 we have the honour to welcome senior Ashtanga Yoga teacher Stefan Engström to our shala in Malmö. Stefan will teach a long weekend workshop (Friday to Monday) on the topic of  the “Yoga of Presence and Wholeness – a unique approach to bio-mechanics”. The full weekend workshop of 16 tuition hours will include Mysore style teaching, led classes and afternoon seminars. (Full programme available below)

You need to attend the Friday evening introduction session to take part in the other classes. Sign up before 1 March 2019 and get the early bird price of 2200SEK. Thereafter the price is 2500SEK for the full weekend. Spaces are limited and participants signing up for the full weekend are given priority.  To participate please contact us.

Below is a detailed description of the workshop and of the full program together with a short bio of Stefan.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

Exploring a new way to approach your yoga practice. As humans, we are unique creatures with an In-Built Inherent Intelligence. This Inherent Intelligence is one of our most primitive parts of our brain for motor and sensory movements. It is within us all from birth and tapping in to this allows us to explore our body as a whole and not in separate parts. This in turn may potentially change the way we sit, walk and experience your yoga practice, with less tension and effort.

Despite having this Inherent Intelligence we tend not to use it to it’s full potential and thus suffer from many problems and chronic injuries. And yet, we all have within us what we need to solve our problems and transform our lives. In order to tap into this Inherent Intelligence, the first step is to become present with our body awareness, then to have a clear Intention of what we would like to happen and finally, allow our sensitive awareness to guide us. Being present is a pretty good place to start as in yoga being present is one of the most fundamental qualities we are looking for.

This workshop is all about how we can apply this Inherent Intelligence in our yoga practice. Through simple exercises we will learn to connect with this Intelligence. You will feel more whole, open, free and expanded. This state and experience I refer to as Free Central Support. We will apply this new experience of Free Central Support to our yoga practise. It can be applied when staying in asana and when moving in and out of them. What we then begin to notice is that throughout our entire practice, as we are now in tune with our sensitive awareness feed back system, it improves the quality of our practice and we feel freedom, openness, wholeness, lightness and expansion. And these are the qualities that tell us that we are functioning optimally.

We will be encouraged to refine our Intention. We will shift from being Performance driven to Experience guided. What this means is that our practice will shift. Instead of feeling effort we will feel free. Instead of compression we will feel expansion and openness. Instead of separate parts we will feel like a whole. Instead of feeling the heaviness of gravity we will feel up-thrust.  Instead of focusing on the end gain we will focus on being present. Instead of narrowing-in we will learn to expand our awareness. Finally, instead of doing, we will now allow.  Instead of focusing on form we will focus on Function.

To be able to know what is meant by Function we need to understand the Bio- Mechanics of the body and the functionality of the joints. We will learn the different functions of all the major joints of the body and how they correlate to each asana. With this new understanding we will shift from being Form driven to Function driven in our practice. “Function leads to form”.

For example, each asana has its own set of functions (e.g. flexion, external rotation). By practicing in a Function driven way, the result will look slightly different from person to person as we have different bodies and abilities.  However, practicing in this way will allow the body to open up safely and in the right places.

Now, knowing the Function of each asana we can hold that in our Intention and allow the Inherent Intelligence to take care of organizing the body in such a way that we are getting the stretch and opening we are looking for.

We will also learn about:
– Stretch and muscle adaptation. How our muscles respond to stretch and become longer.
– The three different states of the muscles – Tense, Active, Relaxed.
– The two main different existing muscle fibres; what they are and how they will respond         and change being in Free Central Support or not.

PROGRAMME

Friday 5/4

17:00 – 19:30 Sharing & Presentation

Finding Free, Central Support.

Practical exercise where the student, with the help of bodily sensations will find a state of maximum freedom of the body. A state where there will be no tension in the body, nor will the muscles be relaxed but active. The inherent intelligence of our body will take care of all this as long as we are present with our body sensations and have a clear intention.

This first session will be the foundation for the whole workshop and can not be missed.

Saturday 6/4

08:30 – 11:00 Led standing poses followed by Mysore class
