FRIDAY-FUN: Yin Yoga & Meditation with Miho

Our alternative after work class Friday-fun adapts a slower pace in 2020. In the end of January (24/1) and February (28/2) Miho teaches two sessions with the theme of yin yoga and meditation. The classes are an intro to a course in Yin Yoga starting on Wednesday evenings in March 2020.

Yin yoga is a slow-paced, calm style of yoga where you take time to explore the sensations in your own body. You stay in simple seated or lying postures for a long time (2-3 minutes to begin with), turn your attention inward and scan your own body to see if there is any tension, while trying to relax using your breath. Thus you can stimulate and stretch the connective tissues which keep all the muscles and organs together in the whole body, while at the same time you can cultivate tranquility and awareness.  The important thing is not what the postures look like, but rather how you let your body be and to stay focused on inner sensations.

At the end of the class, we will do a partly guided meditation for 10 – 15 minutes.

Everybody is welcome regardless of experience! Come with an open mind and get new energy for the weekend.

The class is taught by Miho Hellén-Halme, yin yoga teacher and regular practitioner of Ashtanga yoga. Pre-registration is required and done via our partner Medborgarskolan Syd (click the link)

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020

This newsletter hopefully reaches you ahead of Valentine’s Day and we at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö would like to send you some special thought on this particular day. Your trust and dedication means a lot to us as we do our best to create a safe and pleasant environment in the shala where you can always be yourself no matter what.

We would also like to send a reminder that on Friday 14 February there’s a guided Primary Series class at 6.30am. Since the start of the year we have introduced more guided classes and we have extended our morning opening hours with so-called self-practice (unassisted) from 8.45-10.30am. That way, you still have a chance to practice even if you work late hours or don’t hear your alarm on time. Read more about the extended class schedule and opening hours here.

Please also note that in February during w 8, the winter holiday, all our evening classes are cancelled. In February and March, several full/new moons fall on Sundays and we don’t teach then. Don’t forget to double check in order to avoid arriving at the shala unnecessarily. This and other temporary schedule changes are always found on our news page which it is worth visiting regularly.

NEW COURSES – On 2nd March we start our next foundation course in Ashtanga yoga. The course is suitable for people with no prior experience of yoga as well as people who have tried other types of yoga but want to learn the basics of the Ashtanga system thoroughly. More info about the course and how to register can be found here.

Early March, we also launch a new course in Yin Yoga & Meditation taught by Miho. The course runs on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone regardless of experience. Our existing members can attend the course through their monthly/season cards. “Klippkort” may also be used as payment BUT everyone must register beforehand via our partner Medborgarskolan. Read more about the course and how to register here

GUEST TEACHERS – This spring we have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge of other aspects of yoga besides the physical practice, as we on two occasions have the honour of welcoming renowned experts in yoga philosophy and chanting. On 7-8 March, Måns Broo, associate professor of religious science at Turku Academy, visits Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to teach a weekend course on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Måns is the first to translate the above-mentioned text directly from Sanskrit to Swedish and to study with him is a unique opportunity. During the weekend with Måns, all other classes are cancelled but self-practice will be offered early in the morning before the course. Read more and register here (the course is held in Swedish)

On 8-9 April, we welcome Laksmish Bhat, teacher of Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and mantra chanting at the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore. Laskmish will give an introduction to the yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika and teach mantra chanting. We also get the opportunity to participate in a traditional Ganesha puja (ceremony). Read more and sign up here. Laksmish’s visit is part of a teaching tour he does in Europe and his visit to Malmö is arranged in collaboration with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen where he will teach before coming to us. If you’d like to participate in Copenhagen too, you find more info via this link.

FRIDAY-FUN – our monthly alternative after-work class returns on 28 February when Miho teaches a class of yin yoga & meditation (read more here). In March, Friday-fun maintains the slower pace with the theme “recovery and mindfulness” – a class taught by Isabella on 20 March. You find all our extra workshops, events with guest teachers and retreats on our event page.

There you’ll also find this year’s YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK, a worldwide charity class for the benefit of the organisation Odanadi. Odanadi works against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children in Mysore and the state of Karnataka, India. This year is the 10th anniversary of YST and our event takes place on 24 March (which is a new moon day and all other classes are cancelled). Ashtanga Yoga Malmö has been involved in YST since the start in 2010 and has participated every year with the exception of one. Read more about the class and the cause here

TIM FELDMANN – lastly, we would like to inform you that the guest workshop with Tim Feldmann, which was scheduled for 21-23 August unfortunately has been postponed until next year. Many of you have asked what happened and it is due to unexpected commitments in Miami that Tim has asked to postpone his visit until August 2021, more specifically to weekend of the 20-22nd. (Tim and Kino have bought a large new ware house to be renovated into a yoga centre opening later tin 2020). The workshop will be posted on the website again, but we won’t take registrations before the second half of 2020.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone manages to avoid any seasonal flu so that we get to see you in class. Please remember that if you do get bedridden for more than two weeks we can pause the card (a note from your doctor is needed though). And don’t forget that you can use your “friskvårdsbidrag” with us. In case you need a special receipt for that please contact our partner Medborgarskolan (Joachim Maathz).

Stay updated between newsletters by following our us on social media and/or joining our special group “Ashtanga Yoga Malmö (and Lund) practitioner’s group” on Facebook for everyone who practices with us regularly.

See you on the yoga mat!

FRIDAY-FUN: Yin Yoga & Meditation with Miho

FRIDAY-FUN special class: “Back bend basics”

Friday-fun is our alternative monthly after work special class. We gather to explore asana, play and have fun in a different format than Ashtanga yoga Mysore style. Each month the class has a different theme and this time we explore how to back bend.

Bending back really means to stretch both the front and the back of your body. In daily life we sit a lot, drop the shoulders, and bend forward rounding our backs. The front of the body is compressed which limits our ability to breathe properly. Our core muscles weaken and our spine is adversely affected – which results in poor posture, back pain and difficult deep breathing.

In the primary and especially the intermediate series of Ashtanga Yoga, the practitioner is introduced to several back bends that “open” (soften and strengthen) both the shoulders, the chest and hip-flexor muscles. Regular practice of these two series makes our body more balanced. The muscles of the torso and legs are strengthened and stretched and we create better support for a healthy spine and gets easier to breathe.

This class gives you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of the mechanisms involved in back bending and teaches you techniques to help soften and strengthen the body in order to safely backbend. In a playful manner, we explore a number of back bending asanas in this efficiently choreographed vinyasa style class. We go through basic techniques for positions from Urdhva Dhanurasana (wheel) to more advanced backbends from the Intermediate (and maybe advanced) series of Ashtanga yoga.

The class is open to all levels but is NOT suitable for complete beginners. Participants are asked to come with an open and playful mind!

The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher (II) by Sharath Jois in Mysore. Places are limited so please pre-register via our partner Medborgarskolan (click to register)

You find the entire Christmas and New Year’s schedule here. During these two weeks we also have some special happenings in the shala and in other places which you can read about below. Our regular classes resume on 7 January with some new additions and minor changes to the schedule. Between 7-9 January we’ll get a new floor installed in the shala and the morning Mysore classes will therefore be held in the dance studio. GUEST TEACHER – Jens Bache from Astanga Yoga Copenhagen returns to Malmö to teach a guided Primary series class on 5 January. More about Jens, the class and the lecture here.

THE SPRING SCHEDULE starts on 7 January with some small changes including a few more guided classes. The Mysore class on Tuesday evenings will be replaced by a guided HALF Primary series starting at 17.15. AND on 24/1 Miho teaches a class in yin yoga & meditation (read more here). As from February we resume Friday-fun on a monthly basis.

MEMBERSHIP CARDS – lastly we need to inform you that as from 2020 we have to raise the price for our different practice cards. Our prices have been the same since the start in 2013 but now we unfortunately have to make some adjustments due to increased expenses for the shala. We ask for your understanding and cooperation. We of course remain flexible with regards to splitting your invoices into several installments and will continue to give discounts to students, pensioners and those on sick leave. A list of all new prices is available here

Friday-fun: transitions, jumps and arm balance technique

Friday-fun is our alternative monthly after-work special class. We gather to explore asana, play and have fun in a different format than Ashtanga yoga Mysore style. Each month the class has a different theme and this class focuses mainly on the jumps used in the transitions between asanas in the Ashtanga yoga series.

Regular practice of the Ashtanga Primary and Intermediate series helps us to become stronger and more flexible over time, but this takes time and requires a lot of patience. Learning a good technique from the start facilitates your practice and prevents injury.

During this class you will have the opportunity to play with and explore different movements and jumps. We look at a number of techniques to find strength and control while we learn to remain soft. You will learn the basics of the different transitions done between asans in Ashtanga yoga and get special advice for arm balances and handstands. We alternate working in pairs and using the wall.

The class is open to all levels but is not suitable for complete beginners. Participants are asked to come with an open and playful mind!

The class is taught by Hanna Mjöberg, authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher (II) by Sharath Jois in Mysore.

Places are limited so please pre-register through our partner Medborgarskolan

COVER TEACHER SCHEDULE 22 OCT – 22 NOV 2019

While Isabella is in India 22 October to 22 November, Sara Björs, Sofia Westbom and Hanna Mjöberg from Falkenberg, cover all classes. You can see the full and detailed schedule below (or download it here). Scroll down the page for a short presentation of Hanna. Sara and Sofia you can read more about on our teacher’s page

HANNA MJÖBERG SHORT BIO

Hanna is an authorized Ashtanga Yoga teacher from Falkenberg where she runs a small shala with her sister. She came to yoga in 2008 via Muay thai (Thai boxing) which she trained and competed in professionally at the time. In 2009, she went to Mysore for the first time and has returned annually since then. For the past five years she has practiced with Sharath Jois in Mysore and in 2018 he gave her the blessing to teach the first and second series of Ashtanga yoga. Hanna has also assisted Petri Räisanen and his wife Wambui in Thailand, India and Sweden and has also taught at one of Petri’s shalas in Helsinki.

FRIDAY-FUN special class: “Twists & Core”

Friday-fun is our alternative monthly after work special class. We gather to explore asana, play and have fun in a different format than Ashtanga yoga Mysore style. Each month the class has a different theme and this time we’ll explore mobility and strength of the spine and core.

A strong yet flexible core is key in many yoga postures but also important for a healthy posture and to proper breathing. Through regular practice of the Primary and Intermediate series of Ashtanga yoga you learn to gradually strengthen the deeper layers of your core muscles and at the same time increase the ability of the body to twist. Twisting postures are important for the maintenance of a healthy spine as well as the stimulation of internal organs for proper digestion.

In this class we’ll focus on techniques to increase both strength and flexibility of the core. In a specially choreographed (and fun!) vinyasa style class, we play with and explore a range of asanas from basic to more advanced level. We’ll explore the dynamics of twisting and how to do everything from basic to more intermediate twists in a healthy and safe manner.

The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher (level II) by Sharath Jois in Mysore. The class is open to all levels of yoga practitioners but NOT suitable for complete beginners.

Places are limited so please pre-register through our partner Medborgarskolan (click to register)

FRIDAY-FUN special class: “Happy hips”

Friday-fun is our alternative monthly after work special class. We gather to explore asana, play and have fun in a different format than Ashtanga yoga Mysore style. Each month the class has a different theme. First our this autumn is focus on the hip and pelvic region.

Lotus Posture, legs behind the head and other asanas (postures) in the primary and intermediate series of Ashtanga Yoga require relatively mobile hips. Today’s lifestyle with plenty of sitting on chairs or activities such as running/cycling often leads to stiffness in the hip-region/pelvis, legs and lower back. Additionally,  negative stress and emotions also have an impact on muscles in the hip area. Regular practice of the Ashtanga yoga primary and intermediate series over time helps free such tension stored in the hips and legs.

This class gives you the opportunity to further your understanding of the hip-region in order to understand and deepen your regular yoga practice. You will be taught techniques to safely soften and strengthen the muscles in the pelvis, legs and lower part of the torso. Through a specially choreographed (and fun!) vinyasa style class, we play with and explore a range of asanas from basic to more advanced level.  You will learn techniques of how to move towards lotus posture (Padmasana), how to approach putting your feet behind your head (Eka Pada Sirsasana) and more. The class is open to all levels but  is not suitable for complete beginners. Participants are asked to come with an open and playful mind!

The class is taught by Isabella Nitschke, authorised Ashtanga Yoga teacher (II) by Sharath Jois in Mysore.

Places are limited so please pre-register through our partner Medborgarskolan (click to register)
