ABOUT LAKSHMISH

Lakshmish Bhat has been connected to Sharath Jois and his family for nearly two decades. He was born into a humble Brahmin family in a village called Madageri near Gokarna in Karnataka where he studied Sanskrit in the traditional way in his home village for continuous 8 years. In the year 2000 he came to the Mysore Maharaja Sanskrit College for further studies of Advaita Vedanta and keen on learning astangayoga Lakshmish undertook asana practice under Sharath Jois. At this time he also received the Vidwan title from the Sanskrit College in Advaita Vedanta philosophy and completed his master’s degree in Sanskrit from Mysore University in 2006.

It was upon his Guru Sharath Jois’s request that Lakshmish started teaching Sanskrit and yoga philosophy to the students who in increasing numbers were coming to the KPJAYI in Gokulam in their search for thorough knowledge. Lakshmish joined the shala as a teacher of Sanskrit, chanting and yoga theory in the year 2003.

NEWSLETTER FEBRUARY 2020

This newsletter hopefully reaches you ahead of Valentine’s Day and we at Ashtanga Yoga Malmö would like to send you some special thought on this particular day. Your trust and dedication means a lot to us as we do our best to create a safe and pleasant environment in the shala where you can always be yourself no matter what.

We would also like to send a reminder that on Friday 14 February there’s a guided Primary Series class at 6.30am. Since the start of the year we have introduced more guided classes and we have extended our morning opening hours with so-called self-practice (unassisted) from 8.45-10.30am. That way, you still have a chance to practice even if you work late hours or don’t hear your alarm on time. Read more about the extended class schedule and opening hours here.

Please also note that in February during w 8, the winter holiday, all our evening classes are cancelled. In February and March, several full/new moons fall on Sundays and we don’t teach then. Don’t forget to double check in order to avoid arriving at the shala unnecessarily. This and other temporary schedule changes are always found on our news page which it is worth visiting regularly.

NEW COURSES – On 2nd March we start our next foundation course in Ashtanga yoga. The course is suitable for people with no prior experience of yoga as well as people who have tried other types of yoga but want to learn the basics of the Ashtanga system thoroughly. More info about the course and how to register can be found here.

Early March, we also launch a new course in Yin Yoga & Meditation taught by Miho. The course runs on Wednesday evenings and is open to anyone regardless of experience. Our existing members can attend the course through their monthly/season cards. “Klippkort” may also be used as payment BUT everyone must register beforehand via our partner Medborgarskolan. Read more about the course and how to register here

GUEST TEACHERS – This spring we have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge of other aspects of yoga besides the physical practice, as we on two occasions have the honour of welcoming renowned experts in yoga philosophy and chanting. On 7-8 March, Måns Broo, associate professor of religious science at Turku Academy, visits Ashtanga Yoga Malmö to teach a weekend course on the Patanjali Yoga Sutras. Måns is the first to translate the above-mentioned text directly from Sanskrit to Swedish and to study with him is a unique opportunity. During the weekend with Måns, all other classes are cancelled but self-practice will be offered early in the morning before the course. Read more and register here (the course is held in Swedish)

On 8-9 April, we welcome Laksmish Bhat, teacher of Sanskrit, yoga philosophy and mantra chanting at the Sharath Yoga Centre in Mysore. Laskmish will give an introduction to the yoga text Hatha Yoga Pradipika and teach mantra chanting. We also get the opportunity to participate in a traditional Ganesha puja (ceremony). Read more and sign up here. Laksmish’s visit is part of a teaching tour he does in Europe and his visit to Malmö is arranged in collaboration with Astanga Yoga Copenhagen where he will teach before coming to us. If you’d like to participate in Copenhagen too, you find more info via this link.

FRIDAY-FUN – our monthly alternative after-work class returns on 28 February when Miho teaches a class of yin yoga & meditation (read more here). In March, Friday-fun maintains the slower pace with the theme “recovery and mindfulness” – a class taught by Isabella on 20 March. You find all our extra workshops, events with guest teachers and retreats on our event page.

There you’ll also find this year’s YOGA STOPS TRAFFICK, a worldwide charity class for the benefit of the organisation Odanadi. Odanadi works against human trafficking and exploitation of women and children in Mysore and the state of Karnataka, India. This year is the 10th anniversary of YST and our event takes place on 24 March (which is a new moon day and all other classes are cancelled). Ashtanga Yoga Malmö has been involved in YST since the start in 2010 and has participated every year with the exception of one. Read more about the class and the cause here

TIM FELDMANN – lastly, we would like to inform you that the guest workshop with Tim Feldmann, which was scheduled for 21-23 August unfortunately has been postponed until next year. Many of you have asked what happened and it is due to unexpected commitments in Miami that Tim has asked to postpone his visit until August 2021, more specifically to weekend of the 20-22nd. (Tim and Kino have bought a large new ware house to be renovated into a yoga centre opening later tin 2020). The workshop will be posted on the website again, but we won’t take registrations before the second half of 2020.

That’s all for now. We hope everyone manages to avoid any seasonal flu so that we get to see you in class. Please remember that if you do get bedridden for more than two weeks we can pause the card (a note from your doctor is needed though). And don’t forget that you can use your “friskvårdsbidrag” with us. In case you need a special receipt for that please contact our partner Medborgarskolan (Joachim Maathz).

Stay updated between newsletters by following our us on social media and/or joining our special group “Ashtanga Yoga Malmö (and Lund) practitioner’s group” on Facebook for everyone who practices with us regularly.

See you on the yoga mat!

GUEST TEACHER: guided primary series and talk with Jens Bache

On Sunday, January 5, 2020, we have the pleasure of starting the year with Jens Bache from Astanga Yoga Copenhagen. Jens comes to our shala in Malmö to teach a traditional guided Ashtanga Yoga Primary series class . After the class he gives a presentation of his research on an old handwritten manuscript in Sanskrit about Ashtanga yoga which he found in “The Oriental Library” in Mysore 2017. Jens has translated the manuscript into Danish as part of his research and found interesting details about Ashtanga Yoga in the vīraśaiva-tradition. The lecture is given in English, but as Jens speaks both Danish and Swedish, the discussion about the document and the eight limbs of yoga can also take place in Swedish if necessary. The timings of the day are outlined below and further down the page you can see an abstract of Jens’ project.

PROGRAM

9-10.30 Guided class of the first series (traditional Sanskrit count)

11-13 Lecture (tea & talk) “Aṣṭāṅgayoga in the Vīraśaiva tradition”

PRICE: For those who have monthly/seasonal cards guided class and lecture are included in the cards. For “punch ticket”, 2 punches apply (one for guided class and one for the lecture). Others who do not have cards can book and pay via our partner partner Medborgarskolan (Guided class + lecture 300SEK, only led class or lecture 160SEK/class).

In the summer of 2019, Jens graduated from the University of Copenhagen and now holds a BA in Indology. His bachelor project included the translation and analysis of the above mentioned manuscript on Ashtanga Yoga. Jens is also a KPJAYI-authorized Ashtanga yoga teacher and has been running and teaching at the Astangayoga School in Copenhagen since 2000. Read about Jens at Astanga.dk

Abstract in English

Aṣṭāṅgayoga in the vīraśaiva-tradition (aṣṭāṅgayogaḥ C.823)

The purpose of this project is the classic undertaking for an Indologist; to read, transcribe, analyze and translate a Sanskrit-manuscript from India.

The manuscript in question is from the Oriental Library in Mysore handwritten in devanāgarī on paper consisting of 18 folios. It is entitled “aṣṭāṅgayogaḥ” with the registration no. C.823/2 in the official library catalogue of Sanskrit Manuscripts, but having no information regarding author, date of composition or place of origin.

The assignment has been to identify the text’s literary category and traditional culture in it’s historical period and through analysis placing it in a larger context in the hope of answering questions like what is the overall message of the manuscript and for whom was it maybe intended.

Aṣṭāṅgayoga is only dealt with in 10 ślokas in the folios 12 to 13. In these 10 ślokas the 8-limbed (aṣṭāṅga) yoga is laid out in a structure following Patañjalis’ Yogasūtra, but in a metric poetic form adding meanings of devotion (bhakti) to the technical terms and aligning it with the doctrine of 6 stages (sthala) outlined in the main text of the manuscript in folios 1 to 12.

My initial findings showed that the main text titled Anubhavasūtra is a religious doctrine of Śakti- qualified monism to unite with Śiva in the 6 sthala of liṅga and aṅga through bhakti for the aim of oneness of paramātman, universal spirit, and jīvātman, the individual spirit. This doctrine from the 15th century belongs to the vīraśaiva-tradition which originated in Karnataka, South India, around the 12th century.

The paper ends with identifying the origin of the metric verses of the 8 limbed yoga in the yoga- upaniṣads with an open question to locate the mentioned guru in further research and a field study.
